Cool Ferg! Glad tp see someone is motivated to get their stuff running! I have been slacking big time!

Also, i remember someone telling me they needed to mod the driveshaft with the 80 rear cause it sat closer to the center.

What is your timeline on getting the sky kit? I might have a smoking deal for ya!

Wheres my MC?

Front is staying the same except I am adding the IFS hubs with Sky's axle widening kit. I've thought about looking for an 80 series front, but I'm not too worried about it as of right now. Fronts are a lot harder to find 'cause all the mini-truck guys want 'em for swaps. But for sure, cruiserparts.net has 'em for $1200 or a little better. But my front is fine for now. I just upgraded the calipers, added the high-steer and longs, and blah blah so I'll just run it for now.

-Ferg-

With that setup you'll be about 2" wider in the rear than the front.

60 series front - 1485mm or ~58.46"
80 series front - 1595mm or ~62.79"

60 series rear - 1470mm or ~57.87"
80 series rear - 1600mm or ~62.99"

The IFS hub conversion gives you 1.25" each side (2.5" total).

The 2" difference should help your turning radius though. :D

Kevin, Damn dude, I already ordered my sky kit a couple days ago! Bastard! :flipoff2: As to the driveshafts, we'll see. I know Jason had to on his and he said the length difference was made up actually in the diff length itself. I'm already running an 80 e-lock diff and I'm SOA so I'm thinking I'll be exactly the same--well, actually, a little more room to work with 'cause of the more center diff. We'll see. Dude MC might be leaving today if I can bear standing in line at the UPS store... Otherwise, sorry dude, it'll be leaving on monday. And dude, I'm pretty sure I'm one of the biggest slackers of all time--my lockers still--after a year--aren't all the way wired up!

Sean--Are those the stock track widths? Cause those figures are mesured with the stock wheels and tires for each vehicle and might not be the actual WMS numbers. The actual WMS numbers have yet to be nailed down by anyone around here... I can't find a tape right now or else I'd be for measuring that damn 80 rear WMS right now. Though there is one number that came up that a guy measured a '92 80 front and the WMS on it was 62.25"--that's 1/2" less than the numbers you posted. Anyway, I'm thinking/hoping that it will be more like 1" difference between front and rear and then I'll just run some 1/4" aluminum spacers behind the front wheels (just like I am right now anyway) and make the difference down to 1/2" or so. But even if I get it down to around 1" total width difference I'll be sittin' pretty I think. If not--if it's too much difference--then looks like I'll be selling a kick-ass 60 series front axle and gettin' me an 80 front. :D Also, Sky states that the kit is closer to a 3" difference...do you have the conversion kit? Or measured the hubs yourself before? Just wondering.

Thanks guys! I'll keep ya posted!

I think you should pro rate the fee/shipping charged for the extended wait time! Slacker! :flipoff2:

I'll let the people at the UPS store know that you think I should get a discount on shipping for standing in their line for an hour.... :D :D :D :flipoff2:

Check your mail sucka.

With respect to the 15" wheels on and DB 80 rear.

Years ago, before any 80s were in the wreckers I found one that had burned. It had lockers so I bought the rear axle assembly (ended up in Peter's Tippy). Anyway the story went that the truck had been stolen and the thiefs decided to wheel it so they swaped on some bigger tires on 15" wheels. The wheels rubbed so bad that they started the tires on fire. When I got it the calipers had been ground down at least a 1/4" by the wheels.

I'll edit with some picks if I can find those calipers.

I just checked my mail and there was no MC in my box!

:flipoff2:

:D

Also, just an FYI, i think all Kinkos are now kinda Fed Ex's as well. I just got back from there and NO WAIT, unlike the 1+ wait at the USPS office!

My .02

Yeah, I got the numbers from the TLC FAQ. The 60 series measurements are fairly actuate if memory serves me correctly. I measured my HJ61 axles before I put them under the cruiser, but it's was about a year ago. I don't have the IFS/sky kit, just what I've read on here and Pirate. I could be wrong though. Keep us updated on the progress.

BTW, what wheel backspacing will you be going with?

I am running a hysteer kit and leafs. I will have to dust off the digi cam to get you some pics.

You got pics yet sucka? I'm also interested in the leaf spring placement relative to the diff and actuator...

You may actually be correct on those numbers. I measured mine last night--well, I tried to, it was kinda hard by myself--but I came up with ~63" for my 80 rear. Too cold to pull my wheels and measure my 60 series rear though.

I believe they tried to make it as near as possible to how the 80 series coils/links were. IIRC, it's actually 5 links front and rear. There's a write up on it somewhere out there in cyberspace--I'll see if I can find it. I've read it quite a few times. Seems to be more work than it's worth if you ask me. I would think it would be easier to just 4-link it. Dunno for sure though.

Peter Straub had just finished his coiled fj80 rear axle when I was gathering info on doing mine. I bounced a bunch of emails picking his brian about it. he said it took 3 guys 3 weeks straight of every night after work and and 3 complete week ends to fab up the coil suspension stuff and he still didn't feel he had it right. if you do it just be prepared for your cruiser to be MIA for awhile.

That 80 series axle swap into the 60 was covered on page 22 of the Toyota Trails July/August 2002. That is the issue where the guy in the wetsuit is in the river up in Alaska recovering the submerged 40 series. Peter Straub wrote the article. Check it out.

Not sure on everyone elses update status but here is mine.

My rig is currently parked and will be for a little while and i am currently in disgust mode!

I spent countless $ and time building up a front axle with all the big time goodies, spent an entire weekend in the rain putting all the junk together, only to find out the housing is completely fawked and needs to be replaced (aka regutted and rebuilt). It is bent BIG time and is useless! The vendor luckily sent me a new one so i wont into the name bashing game, but the whole point of the mess and the time involved to swap housing, just has me down a bit. It is EXTREMLY frustrating to me to pay so much $ and end up with junk! In part it is my fault for not doing the cut and turn myself and trusting someone else to build my junk, i just wish that someone else didnt send me a bent housing!!

I figure its better to just give it a little break, instead of lighting it on fire and pushing it off of a cliff!

So, my rig and i are on hiatis for a bit. I will get back to it someday!

Hopefully everyone elses projects are going much better then mine!

I'm on break as well... Actually the word break is kinda funny... Break from working on my cruiser (even though I absolutely NEED to...) and recovering from a break in my left collar bone! Freaking sucks. I missed a landing on a cliff drop while mountain biking in southern utah about a week ago and have been stuck sitting on a couch all week recovering. Knocked my dumb ass out for about a minute and don't remember anything about that particular jump--got it on film though...!! :D Anyway, I'm hoping to be in good enough shape in another week to mess on the cruiser a bunch...
