sure, anything is possible

the guy told me that they didnt fit, but i guess you pointed out that homeboy was blatantly lying they do fit! I do remember him talking about grinding the piss out of the caliper and the wheels didnt fit!

personally, i think grinding a caliper to get a wheel to fit is ghetto! if i spend that much $ on calipers, you bet your ass i aint grinding them! why on earth take a grinder to one of the most important parts of the rig! oh well, my .02

hey ferg, ship me your 60 FF! :flipoff2: I will pay for shipping costs! :D

I'm with ya on grinding the caliper dude. The backside of my wheel was interfering with my new 4runner calipers (like everyone told me it would) so I'm running 1/4" spacers still. :D Sure, you can have my 60 FF. Just send me a bunch more money than the guy that's buying it and it's yours! :flipoff2:

Al, you heard of Peter Struab? Well, that huge brown monster of a 60 of his that's now sitting on 53s used to be running an 80 series rear on coils links. I believe they tried to make it as near as possible to how the 80 series coils/links were. IIRC, it's actually 5 links front and rear. There's a write up on it somewhere out there in cyberspace--I'll see if I can find it. I've read it quite a few times. Seems to be more work than it's worth if you ask me. I would think it would be easier to just 4-link it. Dunno for sure though.

Also, 82-SOA-60 and KLF, how did you guys do your steering? Stock 80s stuff and then a custom relay rod? Any pics? What suspension are you running? Coils/links or leafs or?

-Ferg-

I am running a hysteer kit and leafs. I will have to dust off the digi cam to get you some pics.

Peter Straub had just finished his coiled fj80 rear axle when I was gathering info on doing mine. I bounced a bunch of emails picking his brian about it. he said it took 3 guys 3 weeks straight of every night after work and and 3 complete week ends to fab up the coil suspension stuff and he still didn't feel he had it right. if you do it just be prepared for your cruiser to be MIA for awhile.

Fergy,
ya I have heard of the dude even have a few shots of his pig I got off of slowspeed. He is the only other dude that I've ever seen do it...I liked it much better before the 53s tho :(

I think four link would be worth it tho....And thats what I am aiming for.

Same. I wish I woulda saved the pics of that project though... But, some one did mention that the write up was in a past Toyota Trails edition. Which one, I am not sure...I'll have to check mine and see if I can find it. I've got back through 2000 I think so I'm sure I have it. I do remember reading that it took a long time and tons of work. Anyway, ya I definitely like it more before the 53" monster it now is. But, to each his own I guess.

I figured I would post this clip from my email converstaion with Peter a couple of years ago. has some stuff that was already covered a a funny bit about 15" wheels

I ate some general tso chicken and my fortune cookie said "All things are possible if you put your mind to it" So I am going for it...

Found some pics of tippys rig on jims sight....cool stuff

I dont understand why it would be harder than doing it on Fj-40?? I found more stuff but I'll post it up later..

haha yeah I am not saying it is imposible just would take some work thats all. I thought about swapping an 80 front axle as well. the larger birfields would have been nice but I didn't like the idea of all the wear on the smaller front 3rd and the fact that it would have more wear due to the all wheel drive of the 80's.
I can't wait to see pictures of your junk when you do it.
Jason

Yeah...It will be cheaper and way easier to keep the 60's axles and just run longs so im gonna go with that idea....if i fawk it up im never eat chinese food again....

i kid i kid...

Looking Good Ferg

;) C'mon dude. I'm still at the office. Kinda funny unloading it actually--as we have no dock or truck ramp! Had to get a couple of big fellas from my department to help me lift the sucker out and into the back of my rig. Worked out just fine. So as soon as I get home, I'll atleast be gettin' the 80 dimensions and then I'll work on pulling the rear wheels and measuring the 60 width.

-Ferg-

looks nice that sucks that they chopped the ebrake cable:(
are you going to run a rear sway bar?? the mounts are different and the fj60/2 one won't fit the more centered diff. I ended up not running one at all careful getting it out I put a dent in the inner tail gate getting mine out
looks great
Jason

sssawwweeet....

I swear your my long lost brother.....same tool box and both skate elements....digging the feather lights but they snap like toothpicks..

sick 80's axle....get to it and keep us posted

Ferg,

What are you going to do for the front? Are you going to setup links/coil* or just stick with leaves?

I'm thinking of going the 80 series axle route. Mostly for the extra width though.

He better be going for coils....I cant be the only fool going for it :D

Hey Ferg

Dont go hacking ALL of those brackets off just yet! I got some cool pics of some cat i bumped into with an 80 rear in his 60 that used on of them for his anti wrap bar, remind me to post the pics

Sorry dudes, no time to figure out coils right now, so the brackets are all getting chopped off. :o Luckily my bud has a plasma cutter so I'll be choppin 'em as clean as possible. Keep 'em nice just in case, and save me some clean up time hopefully. So ya, it's goin' under some leafs for now.

Front is staying the same except I am adding the IFS hubs with Sky's axle widening kit. I've thought about looking for an 80 series front, but I'm not too worried about it as of right now. Fronts are a lot harder to find 'cause all the mini-truck guys want 'em for swaps. But for sure, cruiserparts.net has 'em for $1200 or a little better. But my front is fine for now. I just upgraded the calipers, added the high-steer and longs, and blah blah so I'll just run it for now.

Kevin, I think i saw that pic of the guy runnin' the anit-wrap on the bracket. Is it the one in the pic that's on the first page of this thread? 'Cause that truck in that pic looks like what you're talkin' about.

Swap is tentatively scheduled for this weekend. I'll keep you all posted.

Al-- Word. I've snapped a couple featherlights myself. They were pretty much the only thing the place had in at the time I needed some. I'm not to big on rollin' with purple on my setup either... purple = :ban:
