Chiming in on this sadness as well. Sitting at Toyota Huntington Beach with the exact same issue and diagnosis (coolant in #8) so far on our 115K mile 200 series that we've owned for 10 years (and have been religious about maintenance). This is super un-Toyota like. 😢 Bummed.

Dang, hate to hear this. I wonder what happened in the years before you acquired it?

It's a 2013 that we bought 2 yrs old (Certified at Toyota) with 17k on it. Been absolutely problem free the last 10 years and we've been religious about maintenance.

After some digging around here, doesn't appear im alone, but likely not a large enough problem to say it's an overall issue. Just very unlike Toyota for this to happen, that's what is upsetting. I expect this from other brands, not my loyal Toyotas that I've owned over 30 of 😞

While there are some head gasket issues popping up it’s definitely not common… however, lots of discussion about coolant longevity and that eating away at the head gaskets from around your year range and a change in head gasket part numbers which sounds like a change in design. If there hasn’t been an over heating event you may be fine with a new head gasket and decking. Still, not like that’s the best news. Please report back what they find, I’m assuming they’re doing leak down test.

Also, what was your coolant change intervals years and mileage? It’s 10 year coolant but discussion on here has many changing much sooner thinking the longer timeframe could be a culprit.

Sucks man. At 115k miles a Toyota should barely even be broken in.

You are definitely not alone. Unfortunate that there's no real handle on what's causing the HG failures in the 200s. In your case both inadequate maintenance and overheating seem to be ruled out.

Are you going to proceed with a HG replacement job?

most forum members will blame “neglect” and “no maintenance” - as is seen in high mileage thread about HG

You having it from 17k mile prove otherwise

CCN is right. Another problem with the 200 series is the notorious HG issue

Thank you for providing facts

Let us know $$ for repair

115k Hg used to be Subaru issue …. guess we are Subaru now :(

Thank you for slapping my idiocy down… I do not want to be known as the misinformation member.
Hard to fault people here for trusting what the guy says.. he has a ton of experience and people from this board report him giving them good advice with their vehicle issues.

But he’s definitely wrong on occasion.

No, it's not. You really need to stop this misinformation distribution. Seriously, dude.

Not common, but let's be honest it's certainly not unheard of. We're well into the double digits with reports of 200s with unexplainable blown head gaskets on this forum.

It's one thing to severely overheat a vehicle and blow the HG, but these failures at ~200k miles or earlier with nothing concrete to pinpoint as root cause are definitely concerning.

Throughout all of this, I’ve been hoping this is due to owners who haven’t noticed the places the motor leaks coolant, didn’t keep track of the reservoir, and overheated due to the fluid loss.

I’m starting to have some doubts.
