Working my way through the electronics and wiring on my 1977 FJ55

I’ve got Blinkers front and rear until I turn on my headlights then both left and right cluster lights come on solid and Blinkers stop flashing.

One other symptom.

If the hazards are on they keep flashing but slower when the headlights come on.

I might add the wiring is in very good shape. The only real goofiness is at the wires to the fender light plugs the two wires on both sides have scotch locks right at the taped harness. No clue why. Truly no other hacks into the harness anywhere else I can see.

First, is this new or existing problem? Did you change:
Hazard switch?
Turn signal switch?

Second, do the taillights work as designed? As in both bulbs work as they should, in each the park light works, brake light works, and the flasher goes between off and on? Not bright and dim?

If all is good, You could isolate a few problems quite quickly.

1: disconnect headlight plugs from bulbs. If problem persists, likely turn signal switch or maybe hazard switch. If it does go away your headlight wiring is culprit(likely ground).

2: if persists after step one, also look at flasher unit. Is it hooked up and stock? (Big boxy one)

As for if it’s a new problem. It is for me. I’m putting back everything that was taken off this truck 12 years ago.

I unplugged the headlights and it did the same thing.

As for taillights. When I turn on the headlight switch, both lights on both sides come on and I’ve got no brake lights

Both rear lights on each side flash when I use the blinker or the hazards.

On my '74, I found that the harness plug that went into my hazard switch could go either way (rightside up OR upside down). When upside down it did weird things with my lights...

The blink post ground to blinker housing metal was what was my problem. Spot welded together fixed it.
