I recently found out my right rear axle seal is leaking. Took it in to the dealership and they said I was right and it would cost $825 to do both sides in the back. I've never changed out the seals or bearings in an axle, but don't want to pay the $600-$700 in labor when I think I could do this myself. My brakes on the right side were saturated so they would also need to be fixed. This is the part that I'm not too confident about.

I know grey rock is coming up and I didn't register, but I would love to go. I just don't want to take my cruiser when theres a small puddle under the axle when I wake up every morning. I live about 2 miles south of birmingham and was wondering if anyone could help me out (I don't want to take anyone away from trail time though). I already talked to GulfShoresFJ60 from Auburn and he said he would be willing to help out. I'm going to order parts for the axle tomorrow because I'll need to do this sometime soon anyway...can someone tell me what I'll need besides bearings and seals? What about parts for the brakes?

If anyone could help, I would GREATLY appreciate it and would find some way to pay you back:bounce:

Thanks for the info about offroad connection, I'll give them a call.

I guess the main thing I'm worried about is getting into the repair and then running into something that gets me stranded. I always think about the things that could go wrong so I'm ready for anything, and I would rather something go wrong right outside my apartment than out in the middle of the woods(not saying a bunch of cruiserheads can't fix a leaky axle in under a day;) ).

As far as tools, fluids, etc. heres what I have so far:
-many paper towels
-socket set (its a cheap one from harbor freight so I'll borrow tools from one of my buddies)
-jack
-jack stands
-container for used diff fluid
-diff fluid

Things I need to order/buy:
-rear axle parts - Is it just a bearing, oil seal, and gasket per side or are there a few more parts I should replace?
-brake pads

Anything else I'm forgetting? I'm getting tired so I'm probably forgetting something obvious.

Sounds like it's a little late in the game to tackle this before the ride. Catch a ride over to the Crawl and ride with someone, fix it afterwards. Or you could find an independant shop to do it. Or you could dive in and fix it yourself. All are good options, but you better get on it if you are gonna fix it.... Crawl minus 3 days now!

If it was me, I'd dive into the job and post up any problems I couldn't solve. There's tons of info in the tech sections about this job and it's pretty easy all in all.

I tried to plan on attending this year, but my cruisers got some problems other than the leaky axle that need to be fixed before I'll take it out again. Power steering system isn't working so great right now so I have to get that taken care of.

I would be great to ride along with someone for half a day or so...I saw the pictures from last year and it looked like a good time.

When does the event start and when does it end? If anyone has an extra seat sometime during the weekend then I will be there.

Michael

I'm going to work on the things that I think I can fix myself. The power steering is leaking somewhere, but as long as I keep refilling it, I don't have problems. I think there were a few other small fixes needed to be done, but the main one I'm worried about is the axle because it already saturated the brake pads and I don't want to wait any longer to fix it (if brakes don't work=dangerous). Power steering can wait another week or two.

Also, I remembered that Greyrock was involved in some complaints with residents around the mt. olive area. Does anyone know what became of that?

I suspect that Bodean will be kept on a short leash this year.:grinpimp:

Leash?? It better be a chain. I'll chew right through rope when I run out of beer!

Plenty of Cruiser heads in B'ham. They're here on mud and willing to help.
Don't make the Auburn crew come up there one weekend and tear into your wagon:mad: That is if you got a place for us and provide us food and water... If you'd had only posted about the problems 2 months ago, my brother just moved from Montevallo and I was going up there alot.

All that aside... Plenty of open seats in the wagons I'm sure... come to the ride if only for a day and you will immediately go back and start fixing your wagon to get it trail worthy. I never met anyone come back from a cruiser ride and say "meh, it was ok".... they say "I can't wait for friggin' next year!"

I don't want someone to do my repairs for me, I'm confident I can do it. I would just feel more comfortable with someone who's done it before loooking over my shoulder. And yes I would have a place to stay and plenty of food and water for any helpers should they come:beer: . The leak just got noticed less than a week ago and its still dripping.

I'll try and make it saturday if I can, do they charge per vehicle to come in even if you are riding with someone else?

Help

If I wasn't working on my junk until the last minute, I could help.

However, my rig may fall apart backing it off the trailer. So I will probably have plenty of time to help this weekend. Bring the parts, and we should be able to get it done.

Bring parts, bring truck...wrenchers will be available.

X2 Shouldn't take more than an hour or so with some experienced folks looking over your shoulder.
