Hey gang,

Had been planning to do the front axle job (repack, new seals etc..) but i think i did a bit of damage on a recent trip i took.

i've pulled everything apart and the passenger side looks pretty good - i had the birf soup, but the spindle, birf and everything (minus the seals of course) seems to be in pretty solid shape.

the drivers side is a very different story. i think i essentially baked the inner axle seal to the spindle and i think the wheel bearing was ready to go, so I had all kinds of nasty grinding and think the wheel itself was about to come off which resulted in damage to the rotor, spindle and the birf.

the spindle i would think is most definitely shot and needs to be replaced. my question is really related to the birf. this damage that is on toward the end of the short part of the axle - could i live with that for a little while, or is this shot too? the upper part of the birf seems to be okay.

my thought was that this part of the outer axle is not really touching anything inside the spindle so that i might be able to live with it for at least a while.

but wanted to run this past some expert eyes.

just in a bit of a bind in terms of needing to get back on the road by sunday and not really wanting to buy a birf at the dealer or waiting on a new one to come next week via ups. photos here:

I would lock the cdl (7 pin mod) and remove the axle, etc. Run with no inner parts on that side until you get all new parts. Cap off the whole with something so the diff oil doesn't spill out.

so you think a no go on running that dinged up birf? darn. was hoping i could just pick up the new spindle at the dealer ($300ish) and then just rebuild the knuckle with the current birfs.

i have the rebuild kit coming from CO Cruisers today.

this is definitely a messy project (duh) but other than the busted up parts its been going well even for a one  type mechanic.

my understanding is that you can use a mini truck spindle, so why not run these instead of a oem spindle? http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/inde...t-chromoly-spindle-for-toyota-solid-axle.html

The 80 uses the same exact wheel bearings as the mini truck, and i do believe they are the same thing. save you some money to put towards a new birf, cause you should not even waste your time putting that back together, especiually if you are going on a trip.

The wheel bearings are the same but it has a bigger knuckle so mini knuckles won't work

Quick update

Thanks for all the responses and feedback. I really lucked out and found another '94 that was being parted out so was able to get a spindle and a birf to use at least for a short while until i replace. both seemed to be in excellent shape and it looked like the axle job on the donor truck had been done somewhat recently as the grease was very clean and fresh looking.

was also able to pick up a few other odds and ends like a perfect steering column cover and a washer fluid motor.

thinking about going back to buy the entire interior as it has some SWEEEET cloth seats in a nice shade of grey-ish blue herrinbone. looked awesome and the seats were perfect.

anyone want to buy some grey leather power seats? :p
