Very cool.

I'm in the process of putting an 80 axle in the rear of my pig. I'm using coils, but nothing will be in the same place. It looks like it won't look too weird sticking out in the back.

I got the locking axle for free. I figured I'd upgrade to Toyota discs, good ebrakes, full floater and elocker in one swap. :D

My next project is gonna be a FZJ-55. Glad to see someone do the legwork first. The biggest hassle I can see with a stock drivetrain is the engine to axle alignment is way different. One of the two has to move or you have to do a Waggoner and move the cooling system.

Ya gotta love those puke's of Buzzard wheels. i am suprised there still
around. I did not put any air in them the three years i had them and i bet
you havent either. They must be very rare wheels indeed as i have never
seen any like them before expecially with Summit racing BFG A/T copies
shod on them....LOL

Nice job on the PIGGIE she is really taking shape, not that she hadn't before
dont cut away too much metal, thats rare gauge stuff you have there

cruiserhead - What is the difference in frame width between the 55 and the 80 up front where the steering box is? Obviously this isn't a precise thing, just need to get a feel for it.

Just to throw out an idea. I saw a 40 that had an A/C unit out of a conversion van in it a month or so ago. You know the kind that mounts on the inside of the rear headliner. Not the best option for a 40 since you canot remove the top but for a pig it might be the way to go. Could get the whole unit from a pic and pull for cheap and they blow a lot of air. That way you could just use a stock heater up front without hacking up the dash.

The rear heater looks good.

That is a good idea.. Truth is I am not obsessed with the idea of having AC, I guess I am looking for a nice, modern, reliable heater system.. i know this is findable but after going through about two cores with the last one and of course it would be great to have AC but is not necessary.. I started pricing them out, of course I don't have this $$ right now but a more budget is about $850 and the top of the line is $1500 from Vintage Air.. Looks like there is some conflict of the units fitting under the dash, I will have to do very good measurements to make sure it fits... Or possible move forward a section of the firewall which actually shouldn't be too bad...

What is the back spacing and width of those wheels? The stance looks similar to another pig I used to drive...

The wheels are probably standard 3.75" backspacing I guess or maybe a hair more recessed. they are 16.5" but they are thick aluminum (I think, I'll have to check they may be magnesium ) - I had to use 1/4" spacers to make them fit on the 80 series stuff.. In the rear it was rubbing the caliper, but it works fine now..

Jim you are correct I didn't even touch the wheels, never added air or anything, pretty cool!

This is a neat idea but overkill I think.. I hadn't even seen that thread.. I am not too interested in killer articulation actually, or nothing unreal I don't think.. But I'm not 100% sure, but yes I think there at least could be room for that..

Cool Gumby nice to hear all that.. A local guy put the 2" spacer kit from I think front line fab to have his front match the rear.. It is a little goofy all wide, so I am planning as close to 5" wheel spacing with 7.5" rims as possible, or something custom.., so this is about 2" narrower overall I figure... Look forward to seeing another FZJ55 type rig also :)

LOL that is funny... I guess there are two ways to do it and while I want it to be a resto of course function over form in this case, so there will be some trimming.. Also it is pretty clean but the places where there are rust I prefer to get rid of all together rather than mess with them.. that's what I did last time and within a year it was back :( So...

Re rims lol again yes they are funky cool old rims. I briefly had myself convinenced to use them but again they are too wide and 16.5 is a funky size.. But they are cool... Not sure what I'm going to do with them, I had a friend with some 16.5 swampers locally who wants them on his big 55 so they'll probably end up with him..

I run 2.5 spacers anyway. Now I'll just run them on the front. Should keep the tires out of the inner wheel wells at full flex.

Hey, Andre...what about minitruck A/C? Or something little like a Tercel?

Steve

My minitruck has AC that you can have if you help me tear it out. It didn't work when I bought it and I never put any effort into figuring out the problem. Its probably something simple. Anyway, when I can get around to dragging the truck up to Wyoming from St. George, I might be able to stop in Heber if you want and we can tear out the whole system.

Not much to report other than I fabbed up the boxes tonight... I suppose I was as methodical about it as I could be so I was like a slow carpenter, I suppose but it came out pretty well.. These two little boxes pretty much took all night from about 7PM..

First I grabbed the steel and started tracing.. I did most of the cutting with my old-ass freebie chop saw and cut off wheels on the grinder (about $1.70 a pop so it adds up quick but easy and clean)...

In bottom pic, you can see in the end I ended up with a top center piece of 4" by about 5.5" that I based everything else off of.. Everything piece I cut I either traced or cut two for both sides... I also used the good old angle finder on the floor of the pig to have them mimic the angle, it looked a little more normal versus square with the regular floor of the pig... This section of the floor is 10 degrees so I had it match. I had the truck propped up on jackstands and level (which is fairly easy to do) so it worked well...

Here I'm finding the angle to set it at.. I tacked just there, then one on the wheel well to keep it at this angle...

Then cutting my traceouts, and tacked up...

You can see from previous pic there is a section of the frame where the body would probably hit so I had to cut out that section where the triangle goes.. This was a tricky piece...
