John H,
You have how many Cruisers now? 57 of 'em? I only have two but every last OEM zerk on both of them is a 7mm and that includes the spare shafts that I have on hand. I didn't check the OME fittings. Check some of your horde and see what you find! Ignition wrench sets should have the 7mm size.

yeah yeah yeah.......but I don't feel like getting on my back under one ;) I do recall(thinking overnight) they are an odd size......because I had a heck of a time finding a wrench, prollly they are SAE not metric........

What's probably SAE, the OME or OEM? OEM are definitely 7mm as in metric! Yeah, yeah, yeah!!!

was thinking the OEM zerts might be, just cuase 7mm fits doesn't meen its metric ;)

John, do you really think that Toyota would use SAE fittings on a Land Cruiser? I don't think so! :)

Fittings can be a bit more standard across the oceans. I believe the brake lines are an SAE thread, metric wrench though.

7mm does not correspond to any SAE number , 17/64 is .2656, 7mm is .2756.

Some of the zerk fittings I've seen are square (90's) and don't have a standard hex head.

yep, someplace even on your cruiser there are SAE fittings.....I just forget where ;) I think I came across some on my fj80.....

all I am saying is..........the 7mm wrench fit........just cause it fit doesn't meen its correct ;)

heck Steve they might actaully be 7mm or they might not me..........I was sorta thinking that zerts might be a standard size on almost all cars, US or Japanese, toyota might not have its own.

I am going to try NAPA. I will post my findings. Thanks, all.

might be a dumb question, but wouldn't be the first time :o , i know what a zerk or grease nipple looks like, but if there is not one there and only the plug which is basically a square, then can you take the plug out and fill with grease and replace the plug or do you have to install a zerk/nipple?

make sense?

You could try, it would be messy and a pain-in-the-ass to get the grease in the hole without a zerk or a threaded connection between your grease gun and the hole.

What exactly are you talking about? ;)

Wow. That does sound nasty out of context doesn't it?

You can buy a grease gun needle that is designed for the purpose of inserting grease into fittings that don't have a nipple. Sounds like it would work in the example given.

Steve, I went out last night and could not find a damn 7mm to try on the grease fittings...........so I will bow to you and say they are indeed 7mm ;)

oh and if you get a needle attachement, don't get the POS that has a nipple on the end, you are "suppose" to stick it in the normal end but its pops right off,. get the one that screws on the grease gun it won't come off.

John,
That's why I mentioned that a 7mm can be found in an ignition wrench set - 8mm seem to be the smallest size in a regular wrench or socket set. Good advice on which needle to get and it can be a very handy little addition to the tool box, just like the ignition wrench set.
I can't believe this thread has had so many posts, especially considering that jhstatts is planning on replacing all of the zerks anyway. Vise grips would work just fine in that case. I don't see why replacing them would be necessary though. Unless the internal spring has broken or the ball has jumped ship, a good cleaning is all that would be required to get them functional if they weren't holding grease in.

I have just taken the Zerks on and off of my FJ-62 and the 7mm socket is what I used. I was also surprised to see that 7mm was the size since nothing else that I can remember on the car is 7mm.

Andrew

overhanger,

Thanks for the info. I don't necessarily need to replace them... I guess I will just clean them up and see what happens. So I guess I need a 7mm socket, huh? I am glad you guys cleared all that up.

Being a rookie I thought I'd use this non-controversial thread to pad my post count! :) And it's working - I haven't pissed anybody off yet!!!

Yeah........ not even me............which suprised both of us :)
