Boys, boys, boys...

I say just spit on the stainless screws. They won’t rust ya know!

I did this last week. My local ACE hardware did not have a matching length in the #3 phillips head screws (didn't check for Torx), one slightly longer and one slightly shorter. I used a 1/4" Kobalt impact to remove the screws that were on the truck and I could see that they had been removed and re-used once before. Five of the screws on the left side came out with no issues.

Trying to remove the remaining two on the right side, I twisted one bit and snapped snapped off another before upgrading to "impact ready" heads. Used the DeWalt models that have the breakaway rings on them. Hit them with the black WD-40 and let them sit for 30 mins. It took a bit of effort with the impact, but they came out without snapping off.

I had ordered the replacement OEM screws from Onur and used those and a new 0-ring with Vaseline to hold the gasket in place for assembly. That was with 227k on the odometer and 3/3/18 for the install. So we can see if the o-ring fails and when. I put ~500 miles a week on this truck right now, so it will see use.

Pretty sure I did mine on the same day lol. The Vaseline has a pretty low melting point of like 130-140 degrees Fahrenheit, so it's already mixed in with your engine oil.

Also did you break the bit or the screws? I used a impact bit (idk what brand) that was in a half inch adapter and I actually ate some out of one of the new screws with it.

Are you saying there is an O ring as well as the oil pump gasket?

O-ring = pump gasket. I think the part refers to it as an o-ring, but I could be mistaken. There were MANY parts going on and off that day.

Give me a min and I will go get a few pics. NVM .. thats a no go.

I already cleaned up and tossed the bits. I broke two #3 phillips tips that were non-impact grade. One twisted all the flutes and the other just shattered. I got lucky and did not break the screw heads.

I doubt that having a dab of vaseline in 6+ quarts of oil will kill the truck, but I suppose I will find out soon enough. I already put 500+ miles on it since the repair and no leaks or issues yet.

IMO, replacing the screws with new ones is a must if you are using an impact to remove them. Mine were definitely beat up a bit, not sure if it was from being used twice or all me getting them out, but having one strip would be a major crisis for me. The guy on the YouTube video I watched broke a head off and said he spent several hours extracting the rest of the screw from the block. Super happy I didn't have to deal with that.

If you wanted to change everything, there is an inspection bolt and o-ring on the drivers side of the oil pump area I believe. I didn't mess with that at all.

Ohhh ok, I didn’t realize an O ring was part of that job. I’ll have to check on that. Thanks

To clarify and back up what you are saying. The o-ring for the oil pump cover is referred to by Toyota as the "oil pump gasket" but it is by all means a formed o-ring. There is the plug at the driver's side front of the pan that I think is a Allen and I believe that uses a copper "gasket" as Toyota calls which is a copper washer like used on the many banjo fittings on the vehicle. Don't quote me on that, that is simply what I have comprehended from the fsm for that plug. There is also a o-ring that Toyota refers to as such that sits between the oil pan and the bottom of the oil pump that is square in shape. Only way to change that o-ring is to drop the pan. That o-ring seals the oil pickup from the pan to the pump. I hope this helped.

I would guess that whatever you put on the oil pump cover O-ring gasket will get washed away, or at least contaminated with engine oil, fairly quickly. O-rings are designed to move slightly in the gland (groove) to form a seal and the thing that makes them move is the fluid (engine oil in this case) pressing on them from one side. I like to use the Dow Corning 55 O-ring lube on rubber O-rings, but have no data other than what the manufacturer states. I sometimes will use Dielectric (silicone) grease on black rubber, like a PCV grommet; seems to keep them more pliable over time. FWIW.

There are many sources online with compatibility charts for O-rings and chemicals (see the links below):

You find the chemical in the drop down list on the left that will be used in a particular system or that you might apply to the rubber seal/O-ring, and then read over to the right what the effects are on various seal/O-ring materials. From reading the chart, Petrolatum is compatible with Nitrile rubber as is Silicone grease:

Chemical Compatability | Rubber | Elastomer

Chemical Compatability | Rubber | Elastomer

Or K-Y.

Or K-Y Yours and Mine......

Or for the extreme ones: K-Y Intense......

Cripes, people, just buy the damn screws at the dealership or the dealership online, and hold the O-ring in on the OIL PUMP COVER (since that's what this thread's about........) with wheel bearing grease or Vaseline since ALL are petroleum and Lithium based lubricants.....

(Except the K-Y, butt that's for somethin' else........0
I just called the dealer today for a set of screws and they want over 6 dollars per screw. lol YIKES! Almost 50 bucks for all 7.
I'm too stubborn for that kinda price for some damn screws.
This pathetic Plandemic scamdemic has screwed us all!

See @Kernal s post and places to buy that are not your local dealer.

Not all dealers are equal. Proven fact here. MSRP is NOT the same at all dealerships.
