Yup, I have been running the extreme valve body for about a year now and really love it. I only had it on my stock set up for a couple weeks but looking back at my notes my fuel economy went up. My rig has never been that great on fuel though. Averaging 20.4 before the mods to about 15.6 at my present state with a light foot. It really depends on how I drive. I can easily dip below 12mpg.

Brad, do you have the one that locks up in 4th only? A new one is out that will lock up in 3rd and 4th.

Yes Slee is the North American dealer, spoke with the guys at wholesale transmission about a year ago and they mentioned Slee to be the people to talk with.

They picked a great bunch for product support and knowledge.

My plans are the BJ74 with auto and (dreaming) of using the extreme valve body also.

Brad,

Do you recall the way the 440 shifted before you had the modification done?

On mine, when I move the shifter from 3rd into Drive at about 80 kph, it shifts up (I assume to 4th) then immediately up again (I assume to overdrive). It never seems to stay in 4th.

Was this your experience? Is this normal? It seems to run great otherwise. Quite smooth.

Thanks,

Bruce

the second 4th gear upshift is the lock up converter locking up... it just feels like another gear shift...
cheers

Just had my second fill in the HJ61 (mostly city), and I am pleased as punch to see the milage moving up from what was at first less than 18 MPG to 23.3 with this fill. The truck had sat for 6 months before, and I am running some extra Hewes cleaner through it, and boy it seems to be working. I tend to be light on the throttle, moved to slightly smaller tires, had an alignment, and am now happier with the milage. Would like to see 25/26 though.

Questions along the milage vain:

1> Should you have a pro do your injectors... or can a weekend wrench do it. I read that when you change them, you should check the pressures, not so sure i can/should do that?

2> How do you know when your valves need adjusting? I got the truck with no records, and would like to do the valves just to know where Im at, but I don't think they need it. Purrs like a kiity right now, no clatter at any RPM. So what sort of indications do you get that an adjustment is needed, or do you just do it?

Man that tranny kit sure sounds sweet! A 3rd and 4th lock up would be very nice. Spend 80% of my driving time in 3rd! I will add it to the wish list! :grinpimp:

Cheers

Hi Steve:

Injector work should definitely be done by the pros with the right equipment and knowledge. Crack pressures are critical and contaminants should be kept out of them.

As for doing a valve set...you should just go ahead and do it. At least you'll know where you're at and you get to see how your cam is doing. It doesn't take all that long to do it anyway. Same would go with all your belts and filters. They should just be changed out when you receive your truck if you don't know when they were done just so you know where you stand with them...unless the belts are obviously new.

Cheers.

Thanks Stone... everything elso is done. All oils/belts/filters... and I know i should do the valves just for the sake of knowing. I should book an appointment with Rob Millson, and take a trip over to Vancouver, visit the outlaws for a day or two ;) Ask him to do the injectors too! Sounds like A2B is pretty happy he did.

Hi Steve,

Yes, Rob did a great job (injectors and valve adj) and he is very reasonable.

Your mileage improvement sounds like mine. I was shocked at 18 mpg imp the 1st time I checked. Then, after adding some Howe's and Rob's work, I had 25 mpg (hwy/cty). I am looking for 28 one day.

Part of the reason for the improvement, and the reason I stated this thread, had to do with the chnage in my driving habits. The BJ74 is my first diesel. And it is important for me not to drive it like a gasser. Max torque is at a much lower RPM. So, instead of revving up to 3000 or more for brief periods, I now make sure that I stay well under 3000.

Anyway, I took the vehicle up to the Squamish area logging roads yesterday and the more I drive, the more I love it. There is a certain confidence hearing the sound of a diesel in the backwoods. I don't plan to do a lot of mods beyond stock.

Sincerely,

Bruce
