By all accounts, those are awesome grills - take some figuring out how to control the temp, though. You can't adjust the burners, can you?

More about slow cooking...

yeah, it is on or off... you can adjust the air flow to control the temp. great for parties and what not because you dont have to tend the grill... but it is slower than a traditional grill. i prefer my steaks seared in a cast iron skillet, but i use the holland for everything else.

Re: Traeger

The ACE monkey probably had everything thumb tight. I agree, you'd think a thing that looks like a steel barrel would be super hefty, but it's sturdy enough and grills/smokes very well.

My one beef (ha) with them is their digital timer module is an additional 200 bones. Really?

Down to $100 now, and worth the money. But yes, they should all come with the digital right off the floor.

If you own a pellet grill, you really oughta check out pelletheads.com.

what's with these green eggs that Ace is pimping? The lids weigh 80lbs and the cooking area is s*** for the price.

you have to use real wood coal in them and they get to over 1000 degrees, but you can also do a low heat smoke as well. They are basically a kiln

They have great temp control, you can run them from 200f for smoking to 800+f. If you are interested in one, take a look at the Big Steel Keg and its predecessor the Bubba Keg, which is at some home depos on closeout for $449. I have one and love it.

they're based on the "kamado" -- an japanese-type grill/smoker.

I don't have one but have been eyeing and researching for quite some time. supposed to be awesome.

the problem i have with the green egg is if you smoke meat in it at all then use it as a grill it makes everything taste like smoked meat. All tastes the same. I would almost want two of them, one for smoking and one for grilling.

Large big green egg (might be just out of the price range).

X2 (or 3 or whatever) They do rock. They come in different sizes, none are really big. Warranted for life, and the company stands behind them. They cook amazingly well, and the flavor is fantastic. I don't have one, they too pricey for me, but my bud has one and it is very nice to cook on. It is more involved than a propane BBQ, and you don't play with your food like a gas grill. Stick it in, wait the appropriate time, and check it's readiness. No flipping. It uses very little fuel, and produces very little ash. You can bake bread in it, and I can attest to the fact that it cooks a mean pizza!
