That's a sweet boot. Made like a cruiser. Did you get them at the Danner store at their factory?

Expensive pair of boots

Lowa makes an excellent boot, the most comfortable and durable boots I've ever owned, and I've owned alot. About $200, but will last 5+ years.

Lowas, Meindls, and Limmers are all made in the same factory in Germany. Before buying my Limmer Lightweights, I looked hard at these other two products. Two thing decided me on the Limmers...

1. The Meindls (Cabela's) were a mail order buy and had vulcanized soles. I don't buy boots that I can't try on and walk in for 30 minutes at least.

2. The Lowas weighed MORE than the Limmer Lighweights, and had a vulcanized sole.

I like the idea of the Norwegian welt on the Limmers, they can be easily resoled without changing the fit of the boot. This is not true of the vulcanized sole boots.

The Limmers are about $265, and are glove leather lined. Supremely comfortable, but they do have to be broken in.

No....Oddly enough, some of the local vendors were significantly less than Danner itself. Danner sells direct to the public at full tick so as not to undercut their retailers.

Yeah, they're bomber. I've used them for a variety of activities from hunting, day hiking, shop work, wheelin', corporate life, to around town puddle stomping. Unless they change them, I'm a fan for life.

I have a problem. I live in hawaii and have no access to a store that sells decent boots. on top of that I am 6'6" and weigh ~245 LBs. I where A 14-15 size boots and usually wear Doc Martens for shop use.( siz 14 ee) WAY to heavy for hiking. Also I am a ENTRY level hiker/ outdoorsman. I hae been wearing nice tennis shoes to hike. going through them about 3 months. any sugestions on what type would be good or me?
thanks

Danner's for me too. Mine keep my feet warmer in Alaska than my Sorel's.

All is not lost, but you'll need a bit of patience. A number of mail order companies are prepared to deal with situations like yours. You send a trace of your foot, they send a pair of boots. If they don't fit, you send 'em back for a different size/brand.

LLBean and Cabela's are known for doing this, but some of the smaller guys can do it too.

Limmer. Last pair you'll need to buy.

If I sell my house I may treat myself to a pair of Limmers. I've been to his shop and still havn't placed an order.....I used to have a pair of merrel wilderness boots that lasted through a couple of "re-treads" before basically breaking down to the consistancy of an old telemark boot...

The last pair I had lasted for ten years (with a resoling or two). I finally retired those. Just got my new ones last week and went on a ten mile hike through with no breaking in---no blisters, just happy feet.

And for the record, Vasque used to be kickass boots, but they moved manufacturing to China within the last few years and workmanship has deteriorated...so I've heard. I still have my Sundowners from 1992. Need a resoling bad.

Doh, that sucks. I guess I'll have to keep resoling mine.

davepagecobbler.com will resole those sundowners with even better soles.

As far as china, unfortunately it is true. The new sundowners are total crap compared to the italian made ones. Fortunately I have 3 pair of the old style which should last this lifetime ... and the next.

If you are looking for a midweight backpacking boot, I highly recommed the La Sportiva, Makalu. While working with the Navy Seals years ago I expressed an interest in their boots and as a gift they game me a set. They weren't actually Makalu's at the time, but it's virtually the same boot. An extremely well built waterproof boot. They are a bit heavy because they are made for carry a load on your back. They are also a bit warm in the summer because the leather uppers aren't breathable.

One thing that I think you should do is try them on before you buy them. Each boot mfgs. mold is a bit different and that is why the best boot for one person may not be the best for the other.

Glad to see you went with Danner, I have had 3 Pairs of Danner lite hikers since 1979. I will not buy any other hiking boot. If I am not Mistaken Danner Bouhght Red Wing OR vice-versa. I have had 2 Pair of red wing Irish Setter hunting boots for work, I will not buy any other work boot. That Being said I also own 3 landcruisers, I will not buy any other vehicle. I know Good S#@t when I see it.
