82 fj40 with stock spring, stock 15x6 optional chrome wheels(aka fj60 wheels) with 33x9.5s.......they rub a bit at full lock in the front, not sure about off road.

This statement bothers me a bit for some reason :flipoff2:

Personaly I think 40's are perfect with about 3" of lift ;)

Those look good. Pimp do you have problems with the rear wheels articultating? I like the 33's but I'm not sure about 9.5 wide. How hard is it to make the "neccesary" adjustments to fit the larger tires?

the green 40 wont' rub anyplace, the mustard one........has only been to the mall........seems fine on the speed bumps :flipoff2:

I figured as much. It doesn't look like it has seen very much action recently. You're going to have to let me come drool over those rigs. I promise I'll wipe up the slober before I leave. I should be out in WA later this summer for my sister's wedding. I grew up on the East side of the Cascades but I think I might fly into Seattle and visit some friends for a few days before the wedding. Thanks for all the help.

John loves to post pictures of his babies. He is a source of insperation and envy around here.

So what tires did you decide on. Then you have to decide the width.

I am a big fan of the 16" wheel and run them on several of my DD that see light duty off road. You can pick up a 235x85x16 tire (about 32" tall and 9" wide)with a decent traction tread at most local tire shops for about $80 a piece, as opposed to $130+ for a 33x9.5. AND... the slightly smaller size will help keep you from bogging down the motor with your 3.70 gear ratio.
P.S. Don't waste your money on factory 16" rims. White and chrome 16x7s are available most places $40ish.

I hadn't really thought about going to 16" wheels. What's the advantage to that? Just smaller side walls?

I'm getting ready to ship out to "Iraq" in a few days so I won't be making a tire purchase till I return, but I'm leaning towards 32"x 10.5" I think that is a nice compromise. I'll have to think about the 16" wheels.

These aren't the greatest pics for showing the tire size or rim, but I figured I would post them anyway.

2.5" Pinnacle suspension lift, 33" x 9.5" tires. The rims are a 15 x 7, but there custom made. Several years ago I ordered them out of the back of 4x4 mag with a custom backset. I had them make them with a 1 3/8" backset, you can see in the pics how the majority of the rim is hanging out.

I wanted a tall narrow tire, better for snow and ice. But, I wanted to give it that illusion of width? I think it worked?

FYI on the 32x10.50's. If you're looking at TSL radials, the 32x10.50's are actually wider than the 33x10.50's. Don't know why, but it is quite noticeable. Both work well on stock wheels, but the 32's bulge out more.

Another thought about 16 inch rims is the greater load capacity. You can get 235/85R16 (~32"tall) in an E-range. Also (usually) means more plies in the tread & sidewall. Like 65swb45 said, 16" tire are cheaper!

Wider tire will be best (forget looks or stance for a moment) in DEEP sand, or BOTTOMLESS snow and mud where you want flotation (BUT, you need 300+ hp to spin those treads). Unless you've got a healthy V8, your cruiser will never be a tire-spinning monster. Just about the only place where SUPER-WIDE treads and 2F / 3B power will live in harmony is slow speed crawling with super-low gears.

Narrower tires will be better for shallow mud (where you want to cut to the bottom), compact snow, or most moderate/all-round (and I don't mead all-terrain tires) conditions. Smaller tire footprint means higher contact pressure. If these treads are going on your fishing/hunting rig, I assume it'll see a wide variety of terrain (and not so much 4psi, extreme crawling). Skinnies will also be easier to turn (a big issue for those of us still w/o power steering).

Sorry, can't comment on power loss with the bigger tires; my 3B handled the 31x11.5's (4.11 gears), but the engine didn't have to work as hard with the (I know, they're small!) 235/75R15's. I'm not going to mess with regearing 'till I can do everything at once. 34/35's at the same time as 4.88's!!!

Have a safe tour overseas, good luck with tire shopping when you get back.

Cheers,
Steve

btw, Landpimp, your green rig looks classy! You should be proud.
Your truck gets me stoked to finish up my restoration!!!

16" tires are really cheaper huh? Never would've thunk it. Of course all those savings would be lost on having to buy new wheels :0(

I thoguht 33's would fill the wells a bit more on buckreasu's rig with the 2.5" lift. Maybe Sam's club will let me try the tires on before I decide.

You don't have to worry about me in Iraq like you do those poor Marines on the ground. I apprciate the support though. I'll still be able to frequent the forum from over there so all won't be lost. Besides that, I have to deploy so I can make some extra dough to support my cruiser habit.

It is my website and there are some more pics of my rig on there. I don't think the pics I post look quite right, I had to re-size them to fit. In the pics I posted, your right, it doesn't look like those 33's fill the wheel well. I think if you look on my site and click on any of the photo's you might agree that they do fill them nicely.

Check it out and see what you think?

Matt

Ya, those pics posted didn't do your rig justice. They fit nicely in there but now I'm scared to go with anything less than 33's. I'm afraid they might look out of proportion. Is there really a very big visual difference between 32 and 33?

FSUSteve, to be honest your 33's on the 4" lift look very similar to the 33's on the 2.5" lift, at least from that angle they do. I like a bit of a gap too, but I think The tires/wheels need to be in proportion to the lift and wheel well. How wide are your tires?
