So you lazy bum what's the update??? Maybe i'll use some vacation time and Andrea and I will head down for a week if you could use the help. :grinpimp:

Hey Al,

Yep not much progress. Flight school is kicking my ARSE right now. But only 2 more weeks left in my primary course and the break begins. The first day of the teardown is going to be NOV 5th. I did manage to find a few minutes this weekend to seperate the clutch and transmission and get it mounted to my engine stand.

I found some bolts to mount it to my engine stand only to find the engine is so skinny I could only get 3 of the bolts in the back and with all of the leverage out front and the lack of depth in the threads into the block I had to put a jack on the front of the pan. What do other people do?

Also I will be tearing off the intake/exhaust to sandblast it and paint it. Thinking of going with stock colors (unless someone is creative and can come up with a good looking color combo).

What have you all used for Carb paint to freshen it up?

Clutch does not appear to be frozen like PO said. Well it is Frozen but appears to be frozen in the Open position. I jacked up the rear end, started the car in 1st gear and no power back to the wheels. Ran out of time to work on it more and I won't be keeping this engine in it anyway but it would have been fun driving it into the bay instead of tearing it apart.

Yeah. That PO guy is not to be trusted for sure :flipoff2:
FWIW, I drove it up on the trailer via the starter. You sure the transfer case is in gear? :hillbilly:

Haha. No I'm not sure but pretty sure :D. It could be that I was mistaken on its position. I was hoping to see how bad the carb really was. The more I tinkered with it just sitting there it seemed to run a little better than I thought you said it would. But I hadn't had a chance to put it under a load to really see. Only 2 more weeks until the big day and she goes into the bay.

I did get a chance to pull off all of the accessories on the engine in my garage this weekend. Just waiting to get started. The anticipation is killing me. I don't even think about flight school half the time anymore. For instance I should be studying right now (but I'm not haha).

Well I'm back from DEGA!!! Awesome time. The garage is closed on Monday and Tuesday so it will be rolling into its own bay on Wednesday and the teardown begins.

Parts have been rolling in left and right. My Treadwright tires are on a 2 week backlog (don't need them anyway) and I got a great deal from a seller on here on some wheels. They need a lot of work and are pitted with rust but I have more time than money now so that is a plus. They should be here next week some time.

I still need to find some deals on a few parts to stay within budget and I might have to leave a couple of non essentials out (like replacing the windshield that has fogged on the bottom) but I'll get there.

Where can I buy u-bolts for a decent price. I found some on Man-a-Fre but WOW way more expensive than I thought.

I also have my dad comming to visit for almost 2 weeks so I'm going to take advantage of the helping hand and try to get the body work done and the truck sprayed for some quick progress.

More updates on Wednesday.

Do you want these wheels in my garage still??? They are yours for free if you want to grab them.

I'm talking about the ones off of Brett's 60

Call Chris at Fred Anderson for the ubolts.... he might be able to scounge some up.

What did you think of the s***-show that is 'Dega?

Dega was awesome. Had one hell of a time Saturday night. Not nearly as crazy as I thought it would be though. Must be the economy. I can see why. We stayed in Free camping had the s***tiest seats in the whole place (couldnt even see the race) and it was still and expensive venture

No I'm good. I was about to take you guys up on it but I found some up in VA with the clips on them. Saves me from having to figure that part out and weld them on. Not to mention still not sure when I'm going to get up there. I'm hoping christmas as I forgot we are headed to New Orleans for New Years.

Grrr. I went to push the FJ40 into the bay today on post (first day it has rained in months really) and all of the spots were full. They were suppossed to have reserved one for me on the 5th (I know a couple of days away) but apperently that papework coordination was not done. So instead of working on my land cruiser right now I'm at home drinking beer (can't complain to much)

SUPPOSSEDLY there is a spot opening up next week (yeah really vague) and after 10 minutes of haggling I talked them into letting me begin my work in the parking lot. Was hoping to have the body stripped by the end of the weekend but that isn't going to happen.

So tomorrow with every tool I can bring and a really long extension coord and my 110 welder and air compressor I'm going to start doing the body work. That will take me at least a few days. Hopefully the rain lets up or I will be working in the rain.

Not a great start to my 4 week blitz followed by a couple weeks off and another 2 week blitz. Can it be done? We shall see.

At least you dont have to deal with the Aholes on the COSCOM auto skills on Bragg.
good luck with the build.
Hey I wont be going down to Eglin until December. In the mean time I need to make sure I can get my rig fixed in time. Im bringing it down and leaving it there until I move in march.

Yep I hear you. I replaced an engine in my 4-unner project a few years back and they were a pain in the ass.

Let me know a few weeks ahead of the day you plan to come down. I will drive on over and we can go wheel on Eglin.

Still pouring outside but I think I can make some good progress today. We shall see.

This is Thursdays work that I got done in 4 hours. Not to bad working out of my car in a parking lot. I'll post Friday's pictures (that I forgot to take) tomorrow. I'm taking the day off today to spend some time with the wife but should be back at it tomorrow and in the bay by Wednesday when I can really start going to town.

The entire rear of my car filled with tools. I think that CONTICO weighs near 100 pounds. I ran my 4" grinder off of my inverter and it worked great..didn't even break a sweat. Just wish I had my OBA pulley to finish my OBA setup and I could have ran my air tools (if anyone knows where I can get one). I doubt my inverter will run my welder though.

IMG_1886.webp

Doesn't look to bad. Lots of rusty bolts.

IMG_1888.webp

Got those ugly Old Bronco looking wheel covers off. That is what the grinder was for.

If anyone can lead to to a good source for bolts for a good price let me know. I've broken quite a few and will be using my tap and die set a lot to clear out some holes. CCOT and Cruisercorps seem so expensive and I need most of everything they sell. Could be in the 100's of dollars just for hardware.

Well I got another 4 hours in yesterday. I think I've got about a total of 12 all together now. Sadly the shop is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and this week they will be closed on Thursday because of Veterans day. I should be moving into a bay late Wednesday afternoon so one more day out in the parking lot working out of my mobile garage.

Lovely rats nest. I also found multiple ant nests (which were still in there and ran with their eggs everywhere. Also found multiple mud bees nests. Especially up under the dash and around the transfercase.
IMG_1893.webp

Making Some progress here. These are for stripped nuts but I hammered them onto the screws that had rusted in and painted over making them impossible to screw out. Took me a good 45 minutes just to get some of these hinges out on the barn doors (which are toast by the way)
IMG_1896.webp

Now that looks like progress. All I need to do now is find a way to get the last 4 body mounts off in the rear. Can't get a saw to two of them. I also have two more that stripped out on the running boards. Snapped a few and only 2 came out on their own.
IMG_1898.webp

So Wednesday I hope to get that done and finish tearing apart the rest of the knobs and wiring in the dash and pulling the pedals and colomn then pulling the cab off of the frame. If those body mounts don't give me to much trouble it should be done and the sandblasting and buildup will begin.

Just a few more pics. The drivers rear was lightly smashed into something at one point in time. Which smashed the one year only reverse light as well. I'm going to try and save it but might have to bite the bullet and buy a new one. Started cutting out some of the rust. The rust really isn't bad. The rockers will be a very easy fix. The other sections are just around spot welds that should be pretty easy. The running boards are great on top but the brace underneight is going to have to be completely rebuilt. I'm going to need a bit of sheet metal and a brake for that. The rear corners are the worst and might take me a bit of time. That and the hard top rear corners. Still not sure what I'm going to do there. Luckily the frame is just surface rust and the rest of the cab is rust free.

#1: I need a sand blaster

#2: I should have brought more parts home with me. I'm bored already and don't have anything else to work on until my hog ring pliers get here.

Here is what I started with. For those that don't remember I am doing this project on Ft. Rucker in their Auto skills lab and they are closed on Monday and Tuesday. Sadly this week with Veterans day they are closed on Thursday as well.

Here is the Resistor that thanks to mud I am going to go to radio shack or autozone and see if I can't get something similar in to replace this so I can have a two speed fan.

Had a bit of rust where a PO didn't have a good seal on his heater hoses. I mean I'm not the best vehicle owner. You can look at my F-250 to see that. But anything that will have a lasting effect you can bet I'm going to fix. Best I could really do without going overboard for something you can't really see is pulling out my dremel and rounding out the hole to make it look somewhat normal and killing the rest of the rust.

IMG_1911.webp

Cleaned up the top a bit. Went over old medical type (factory) tape with some nice black electrical to seal the seams in the electric motor (spun like brand new when I put 12V's to it)....Going to keep me very warm.

IMG_1910.webp

Last but not least. Actually looks better in real light and life.

So this color is Gun Metal Grey from Duplicolor. I think it was around $6 a can from Autozone. I am not a Duplicolor fan at all but I bought this to try and match my LX450 color for my bumpers/wheels. It had to much matallic in it but used it on the wheels anyway. Had some left over and decided to use it for my heater.

Notice in first old picture heater is actually very dark. Not the stock Toyota color that everyone talks about here. And my seats seem to be to light from everything else I see. I'm going to hold the stock gauge cluster next to it when I can go back to post and get it to see how close it is. Besides all of the metallic flake which I don't like, I like the hue more than the toyota color. I migth go back and buy a few more cans for the bumperettes, bumpers, seats and center console. It is way easier than than the CCOT spray and way cheaper than the JToutfitters can at $13 plus shipping. Not to mention the cans from duplicolor are surprisingly very full. They even have more paint in them than krylon. I use a krylon primer in the can though as I find it fills a bit better than the duplicolor. Probably not a big difference though.

IMG_1914.webp

Here is a complete pic and one in the sun. Much more metallic shows in the sun than this is showing though. And yes I was drinking by 1200. What can I say, I'm on vacation and I still wake up around 0400 every day so it is not like I just woke up. Love that O'Reilly's koozie.
