Gee thanks Dave! Taking 26 scouts about 45 minutes north of there in a couple of weeks! Not to worry, we've seen plenty of bear scat in the camp in prior years. Just another reminder to tell the moms not to send a lot of junk candy in summer camp care packages this year!

Take some bear lockers with you. Throwing the food up in the tree "the scout way" will still attack plenty of bears and racoons. I would keep the food as far away as possible from camp.

We locked up all our food away from sleeping quarters along with no brushing teeth and no deodorant when we camped 2 weeks ago.

WOW, I grew up just down the hill from there and grew up going to Lake Isabella. I never thought of it as bear country, I always thought of Mammoth, Yosemite, & Sequoa as bear country. But I guess the fires have brought them down.

LOL - we do string up any food items every night when we're at Camp Whitsett! We also encourage the kids to keep items like deoderant and toothpaste in ziplock bags. We don't use bear cans, but do take precautions. The bears know where the mess hall is!! They take precautions there too!

They caught a bear in 29 Palms two weeks ago, so they go alot of places..................

We have a small cabin in Green Valley Lake (near Big Bear/Arrowhead) and took the dog out for a walk last Saturday night.....And what did we see but a very big bear start walking up behind us! The dog (a German Shep) smelled him first and luckily turned and scared it off....

People are moving into their land. Stay out.

Fixed it for you. :flipoff2:

We shouldn't have to stay out. We just have to accept the fact that it is their land and act accordingly and if something does happen they are just being bears.

Ok I thought I knew a fair amount about being in bear country but why no toothpaste or deodorant?

Cause they smell the mint... or the "sporty" smell given off and they'll come rifle through your tent to figure out what it is.

Exactly Mo, respect them and don't keep any yummy food around and all will be fine. Just read up about bear attacks and you'll see its a rare.... also, Bostons make good guard dogs. Most Bears think of pesky little dogs as a nuisance more than anything and will head somewhere else. Not to mention your dog will know the bear is there long before you ever will.
