Any advice for him? He's relatively inexperienced.

Probably best to have that ATRAC engaged (in low range) on the rocks. It kicks in when needed. Not quite sure if it works in tandem with the rear locker. There's some chatter on the FJC forum about those working simultaneously after a certain build date. Also, if you're not on slippery terrain, or not really in need of that rear locker, disengage it. Steering gets much better.

Any time you're not sure about what line to take, stop. Scout it out, ask for help/tips. Everyone has been very helpful to me when I've needed coaching. Be clear on the hand signals being used. That's important. Spotter and driver need to be on the same page. Seems like common sense stuff, but ya don't want to learn this one the hard way.

There was a situation on that Oregon trip where a group of FJC owners tried to get me to be their trail leader. That led me to believe they had less experience than I had, which was two previous runs in Nevada, and a couple hours on those Oregon trails the day before. I recall claiming "Not it!"

Did end up leading a couple other FJC owners, however, my passenger wheels those trails a few times a year and we've been buds since college. Also wheeled with the other drivers the day before. Just came down to trusting that group vs. the other.

You got good people to wheel with here.

Trust on the trail is HUGE!
If you dont trust your spotter, bad things can happen!
On the Rubicon, Alvaro did most of the spotting, and he was AWESOME!
In our group, we have Shawn, Jack and RustyDan who are seasoned vets at getting rigs through!
He'll be FINE! It will be a great breakthrough trail for him!
HIs wheel base is set up very well for this run...
The only real concern will be clearance...and we have rocks to remedy that!

CANT WAIT! CANT WAIT! CANT WAIT!

You are like a kid in a candy store. Bummed I have to pass this weekend. Hopefully Deer Valley makes it on 2008's calendar.

Yeup!
Its a BLAST!
Sorry to hear you cant make it!

I need to get my front tire down to Les Schwab and get that rock out before tomorrow. I think I'll skip the soft top since I won't have a passenger.

I think it is likely there will be a chance to run it next year.
This is the third trip there for me this year. If we don't do it as a club run we can always get an informal group together and do it.

Hey Rusty...I thought your boy was gonna be going along!?
What happened there?

Im alwyas up for this run, so if there's an impromptu...IM IN!
that is unless my rig happens to be in pieces for some reason or another, which is entirely possible...

I tried to get my front tires balanced to get that steer vibe between 40 and 45 MPH out, and they (at Les Schwab) found that ONE tire is defective and so out of balance that it cant be resolved!:crybaby:
That B L O W S!!!!
And, my dumb ass didnt get the warrenty from 4WP...Live and learn!

See you guyz (who arent HOSED and have to work :flipoff2:) TOMORROW!!!!

:bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2::bounce::bounce2:

Now for that comment, watch me break something...Karma is a BITCH!

OH YEAH...BTW....
Patrick...the kid that came with me on the Jumbo trail...will be a passenger with me again, and his folks broke down and got him a wrangler...His mom also got him a Jeep Hat that she dared him to wear on this trip, so he MAY, or may NOT be sporting, said hat...
Out of respect for us, he declared to his mom that "he couldnt do that to us..."
The youngster knows a FO'PA at such a young age...

Hes a good kid despite his choice of rig!!!:D

Hell grow up someday!

Tell him it's all good, I still like Jeeps, and can talk his ear off with what to do and what not to do with it.

I would own another Jeep in a heartbeat. So far it has been one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever owned, far more than my two other Toyota's. This one is doing really good so far...

See you guys tomorrow.:bounce::bounce:

Sounds like karma already caught up!

Y'all have a good time out there. I'll be sure to say something nice about ya in my submission to Trails.

I'll have to try it another time. Hoping to be able to get new sliders in January. Those All Pros are looking pretty sweet.

So, a little bird told me it didn't go well. I need details, mostly I need pictures.

I was a little busy, so I didn't get any pictures, unless you want to see pictures of my damaged front bumper.:D

Pics soon, maybe today. Looking for an app to give me gps data for each pic, based on the time of the pic and the track from the Garmin. Anyone tried this yet?

Looking forward to the pictures. I wish I could help you, but that is way out of my league.

Ok...I can understand the lack of photos...but how about a little recap??? Obviously plugging away at a keyboard is within everyone's ability here :flipoff2:

Ok, well I will give it a quick run down and let everyone else fill in the blanks/photos.

We left Woodfords at 0930 and motored up to the staging area on Hwy 4. I had ridden that road numerous times on my motorcycles, but had never driven it in a vehicle.

We got to the staging area around 1015 or so and aired down. We got lined up, I will try and get the order right.

Shawn: FJ40 (built)
Mark: Stock Nissan Xterra non-offroad/no rear locker (Dick's friend)
Jason: Stock FJ Cruiser Manual with rear locker
Kieth: FJ60 (built)
Dick: Stock FJ Cruiser Automatic with rear locker and front leveling kit
Jack: Stock FZJ 80 with front/rear lockers

Shawn walked right through the first obstacle, of course.

Mark got a little hung up and the spotting, rock stacking began. He had to take a slightly different line and we almost got him through, but not quite. He got hung up on the rear spring mount/spring, passenger side. We had to hook up the strap to Shawn and got him over the first rock.

Jason took the same line and pretty much had the same problem but we got him through.

Keith walked right through it, of course.

Dick took the now called low-rider line and we got him through without the strap.

Darcie drove and I spotted, she walked right over the low-rider line.

Darcie kept driving because I was busy spotting and what ever else. We moved ever so slowly forward up the hill, lots of scratching and scraping were heard. Dick got hung up in a rough spot and Darcie was repositioning the 80 to hook him up. As she was backing up, the front passenger bumper cap hooked a rock and promptly ripped the cap off. The driver's side cap took a hit shortly thereafter (just a dent).

Dick was able to free himself just as I was getting the strap. We continued up the hill and finally caught up to the rest of the group. Shawn had stopped and decided to call a meeting to see if we wanted to continue. Shawn and I took a walk up the trail a little ways and came back to the group (the trail conditions were not improving). By this time we were approximately 3/4 of mile (maybe) and almost two hours into the trail. Shawn wanted to ask the group if turning around was the right thing to do. Darcie and I were of the "turn around while we were ahead" group.

Everyone else agreed and we got the caravan turned around. Dick and I made it back down and waited for everyone at the first obstacle. By the time everyone made down the staging area, it was around 1:00 pm. We crossed the pavement and stopped for lunch and everyone aired up.

We make it back to Minden around 3:00 pm.

Way too rough for the stock low riders of the group. Looking forward to running it next year, when the 80 will be ready.

Thanks for the recap Jack. I, by the comments above, thought there might have been more carnage. But glad to hear everyone voted the side of reason and cut the losses. Just out of curiosity: Would this, in your opinion, be a trail to drag my hundy through or maybe not?

Acutally it was surprising that we did not have any breakage. Some damaged bumpers and skid plates, but nothing mechanical.

I think with your armour and some decent spotting, we could get it through. Once I get the 80 built, I will try it again. I do think for our rigs, going from 88 to 4 might be the better way, down hill on the really tough stuff.
