I saw the below listing on BaT and thought it was odd so wanted to post here so maybe the experts can enlighten me. I commented on the listing but being that it is my first comment on BaT apparently it has to be reviewed and approved by BaT to be shown.

This is a 1983 FJ40 "LX"; current (ends in ~30 minutes) listing:
1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 LX 5-Speed - https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1983-toyota-land-cruiser-fj40-49/

This same vehicle was previously sold in 2024 on BaT:
No Reserve: 1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 LX 5-Speed - https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1983-toyota-land-cruiser-fj40-lx/

Background: I have a 1982 Saudi FJ45 with no factory heater or A/C. Being that I live in Texas and this is my daily driver, both a heater and an A/C would be greatly welcomed. Thus, I have been looking to add factory options of both into my ride.

To the listing: What peaked my interest is when I saw the Vintage Air install on the current listing, and the OEM A/C and heater on the original listing. "What a shame!" I say to myself. I then start looking at the original listing photos and YouTube "walk around" video and notice some strange (to me) things:

1) The LX badging on the passenger side of the vehicle is in the incorrect location; it should be to the right of the "Land Cruiser" emblem:

From the listing:

From Proffitt's site:

PCARMARKET:

The BaT listing mentions a repaint, so no big deal maybe the LX emblem was replaced in the wrong location after repaint.

2) This brings me to what I thought was the strangest thing: In the prior listing's photos, an OEM style inside heating unit is clearly installed, but there is no heater blower installed in the engine compartment. Additionally, on the prior listing’s YouTube “walk around video”, you can also see there is no factory firewall cutout for the heater blower screen, heater hoses, and no blower or heater valve mounting provisions so it’s not like it just got removed. It appears it did not come from the factory with a heater.

Prior listing video (At 3:26 he opens the hood and you can see there is no firewall cutout for the blower)

No blower in engine compartment, no factory cutout for blower, no heater lines or heater valve, and no mounting provisions for any of these things:

In the comments on the prior listing, the another commenter pointed out the fact that there were not provisions for a heater blower on the firewall, and the seller commented back that he answered the commenter via email.

Further down in the comments, another commenter asks if there is in fact a heater, and the seller responds:

It was definitely missing a few hoses, and some factory firewall cutouts!

In summary:

  • With no firewall cutouts for the heater lines, and the blower, this appears (to me) to have not come from the factory with a heater?

  • If it did not come from the factory with a heater, then this is not an LX?
My dad taught me long ago what "assume" means, but here goes anyway:

Assuming both of the above questions are correct, would this appear to be a Gen market FJ40 with factory A/C and power steering? I then have to assume that someone later put an LX interior into it and added LX badges, with the passenger side badge incorrectly placed.

What am I missing here?

Like any of these, there are a couple of things off. @Chamba pointed out that the wiper motor cover is upside down; you can see that there is the wrong year model fuse box cover (looks to be one of the pre '79 models) in one of the photos and it also appears to have been moved from factory location. With the 79 and later models not having a removable fuse box, that was possibly swapped out to an earlier fuse box.

My Saudi 45 had plenty of things wrong with it when I bought it (still has the Saudi plywood body mounts under the bed) so really wasn't trying to nitpick the listing per se.

Mainly curious if this is an actual LX model or not. Even if this is not a true LX, I love that LX interior.

Hello,

The chrome package gives it away as a Saudi-spec 40 Series. However, there are some details.

Saudi (and Middle East spec) spec 40 Series either did not have a heater or had an AC cooler. This truck had no heater, and the AC setup is aftermarket. Where it was installed is a good question.

There is a lot of non-factory wiring in the engine bay, presumably for the AC.

There is a lot of chipped paint all over the truck, with what appears to be surface rust. It appears that this truck lived a hard life. It is interesting how the PO had the truck resprayed but forgot about the spots on the emergency brake, the air intake or the frame rails, to name a few places.

This truck has an H55F. Chances are it is slipping gears and needs a rebuild.

I like the glove box door label. It was used very briefly on late model 40 Series trucks, and the warning about shifting between H4 and L4 is still in use.

I think this truck needs some work.
