Crap I didn't even know I was going to be trail leader on that trip. I barely know the trail. Most trips I'm usually ass up head down following the guy in front of me.

Judging by today's Reno Gazette Journal cover page story the BR trail is on the endangered species list...bummer! It doesn't sound good. Too bad the bone heads, once again, will ruin it for the rest/clean up after yourselves folks.

WTF!?
Pretty soon there will be NO WHERE to go, and I may as well move back to Chicago, cuz it will be the same lifestyle!
Frickin MEAT HEADS arent happy enough with the trails that are there and go blazin up the hill sides!
However, I do understand that not everyone is as cautious as we are, but why is it always their FIRST instinct to CLOSE!

This is killin me!
What a DRAG!

It is a symptom of our aggressive population growth too. So when you take a small area like BR and increase usage significantly you are bound to attract attention. And, although I can't blame them, add a bunch of garbage, human waste and trail abuse and you have a recipe for closure. The human waste thing really pisses me off...almost everywhere I go I have to look at toilet paper in the bushes, sage, on the ground, etc. They're too effing lazy to #1 bury their s*** and paper or use a PETT system. Depressing!

On another note: We hiked the Granite Chief trail out of Squaw Valley last Saturday up to Granite Chief peak. Beautiful trail and scenery...but what do you think we found laying on the ground at the top? Two beer bottles...right on the PCT trail. Talk about WTF! But off-roaders aren't the only pigs out there...I see the garbage from all user groups.

Do people really NOT GET IT!?
If youre involved in this past time, or any out door past time for that matter, how are you NOT AWARE of this consequence!
I think the human waste issue is debated by MOST people as..."well bears s*** in the woods...why should I worrie about it?"

I like my "luggable-lou"!:D

They just don't care...and/or are ignorant. Don't confuse "ignorant" with "stupid" (ignorance is choosing to be/remain stupid).

You can't fix stupid.

Ignorance can be cured.

I'm sure you remember the outrage when hiking took off in popularity. "All our trails are going to be close!" "The sport is being ruined!"

Sounds kind of familiar to me.

What I would expect to see in the future is some kind of permit system, like you see on the more popular hiking trails, which is tied to an educational program.

But what saved hiking was peer pressure and leadership by example.

Yeah...but it's just easier for the FS to just rope off areas...as Wilderness Study Areas or true Wilderness Areas: It's cheaper and easier for them than administrating and managing the masses. But you're right: Lots of loud, politically powerful, well organized members/groups can affect their decisions! We, however, do not (generally as a group of off-roaders) fit the description of that...

We went through it with the mountain bikes...but NORBA was the political group, that by the way, was started by one guy(!)...and later IMBA joined in too...

We've got to get organized and focused...otherwise we just have to resolve ourselves to fewer accessible trails...

Ive been looking at the write ups, and reading the Eldorado site and meeting notes...
I do agree that something needs to be done, but I dont feel that closure is the only solution...
Of everything else, education would be the BEST solution. Im also quite certain that if volunteers were needed, there would be a LONG list (my self included) who would step up to help!
If the ignorant people really understood what was at stake (meaning permanant closures) I have a pretty good feeling that they would think twice before they do stuff! Stick to the trails, go to the higher ground insted of bombing through the muddy river crossing, pack in and pack out...

Espressomon brought up a good point too, that its not only the 4WD community...I seems to me that were the most obvious to balme.

Id really like to get more involved somehow, cuz this is just a SHAME!
There is sooo much out there to enjoy!

My guess is that if you pointed out the error of their ways to people on the trial they would listen attentivly to your every word.

Seriously, evangelical methods work. You just need to apply them in a respectful, calm, and friendly manner. Like the Eldorado Sheriff that talked to us at Buck Island.
