Does anyone experience their backup camera not coming on when their LC goes in reverse? Specifically when it is the first time the car starts for the day. Subsequent starts throughout the day don't seem to have this issue.

If I let the truck idle for about 45 seconds then it seems to be ok when I go to reverse - otherwise it will just go blank and go to the NAV screen after a bit. I can switch back to "park" then to "reverse" and the camera starts up but it is annoying that it doesn't do it every time.

My 2013 F150 FX4 never had this problem and my 2015 Lexus IS350 doesn't have this problem either. The backup cam always comes on when the car goes to reverse. No games necessary to make it work.

Mine is a 2014 and is still under bumper to bumper warranty, but as usual the service department is clueless.

Thanks in advance.

We have seen this on my wife's ES, but not on our LX...

I have a 2011 and have noticed this when I am starting the truck, shifting into reverse, and turning on/off the radio/changing station/switching to iPod/turning on heater/ac, etc. all within seconds of each other. In my case, it seems that the head unit just gets confused and the result is the backup camera will either flicker or does not turn on - screen is black or 'stuck' on my FM presets, or whatever. If I don't mess with the radio or climate controls, and I just start the truck and back out, I noticed my backup camera always works as expected. Not exactly an acceptable use case for their software system, but wondered if you were adjusting radio / ac at the same time?

Nope - just turn it on, buckle up, put it in reverse.

I learned early on not to push any other buttons - it upsets the system.

Yes, this happens on my 2013. I've found it won't do it if I wait for the NAV system to boot to the "Continue" menu, but if I put it in reverse before that it's a 50/50 chance it won't come on. Shifting to Park (or Neutral) and back corrects it as well.

I haven't tried to debug it but I have a suspicion it's because bluetooth audio takes an extra couple seconds to initialize.

This is just one more reason I have my screen set to OFF. I don't use the navi, and that means I never have to wait for that annoying warning screen.

I wonder if it is synching with your phone during that time.

Yea - starting to wonder that as well. Like I said - it is inconsistent whether I wait or not wait.

Mine has started doing this since I put a USB memory stick in. I was thinking its busy reading the memory stick along with other system initialization and phone link up. Do you have something plugged into the USB?

That is a good question. No, I don't have anything plugged into the USB. I think I'm going to try turning off Bluetooth on both the iPhone's and see if that changes anything. That is the only outside influence that could be interacting with the system.

Yep, both of mine do it. Actually 4 of the 200s that I have owned did the same thing.
It's always been my guess that the system goes through all its booting up processes and sticking it in reverse before it's done, gets it sort of confused. I can generally go back to park and back to reverse and that takes care of it.

mine does lc200 2015 does it randomly; Turn off bluetooth on your phone one morning and see.
I also think its just booting up and get too much info all at once

Have any of you tried timing the boot-up after having set your screen display to "OFF"?

Just curious, as my 2008 screen is fairly quick to get to the back-up camera... The screen pops on just for other functions as needed...including the backup of course.

The audio/nav unit runs QNX, which is a real-time unix variant. I can't see the bootup process, but being a unix guy, I highly suspect it's attempting to load a module that's taking a while. Bootup is typically serial, so if the bluetooth module is taking a while to initialize because it's trying to sync to any devices when it loads it would delay anything that came after it in the boot process (i.e. the backup camera). I've noticed on mine the screen is black for a few seconds and then sometimes flashes a "Phone Connection Successful" message at the top of the screen just before the warning message/continue button pops up.

Again it's just a hunch. If I ever get around to hacking into the unit I'm definitely going to fix it :-)

I haven't had a chance to shut off blue tooth yet but I will try that tomorrow and see how it goes.

I have the same issue, backup camera doesn't come on. At first it was intermittent, but now it rear rarely comes on (sometimes still does.)
As noted above, waiting for the nav/entertainment system to fully boot up has no effect.
Bluetooth connection to my phone has no effect.
Rebooting the system by disconnecting the battery had no effect.
I've checked the plug on the camera itself, it looks good.
Other electrical systems effected by shifting into reverse (reverse lights, door locks and side mirrors) are fine. It's only the camera.

Any suggestions?

I've had this happen every once in a while on our 2013... It feels like the software is just slow... Usually it is when I'm shifting in a non-typical sequence... the front & side view cameras come on, might be messing with the blue tooth, put it in neutral or park, then reverse and the rear camera just doesn't catch up... but it always sorts itself out on the next shifting cycle...

Sometimes, I think if you shift in reverse too fast before the LEGAL BU!!$HIT disclaimer stuff has time to post (every time you start your truck, forever, you have to see that BS is beyond STUPID!!!) Sorry Toyota lawyers it is boiler plate at best, extortion at worse, what we can't drive the truck or use its GPS we bought and paid for before touching the LEGAL button. Just perhaps, the bubble gum chewing, iPhone gripping minor in the front passenger seat hit "I ACCEPT", thus, the validity of your protective veil has been that quickly pierced, simply by contracting with a minor. Tort reform, anyone???

I know, I don't blame the Toyoda's for covering their rears, they have had enough legal BS treatment by the U.S. legal system. But fear not everyone that buys a U.S. Toyoda is probably paying an additional $250.00 to $1,000.00 each to the legal repayment fund to cover the billions in legal expenses and fines. Amortized over two or three million units for a period of years until economic equilibrium occurs.

Are saying my back camera isn't working because of lawyers? Those bastards!

I have 4 newer Toyota vehicles with the backup camera from the factory and the Land Cruiser (2015) is the only one that doesn't pop the camera view on if you shift into reverse too quickly. It seems to have a more rigid initialization routine for all the software startup.

Do the 2016 LC's have the newer version of the Entune system? My guess is the 2016's don't have this problem, although they apparently have some other nag system (I was going to correct this to say "nav" but nag seems more appropriate!) bugs from what I've read.

I hope Toyota does what I just read Hyundai is doing: backwards compatibility for infotainment on cars going back to 2012, including Apple car play. Personally, I feel that having regular updates on the nav/ infotainment would make the truck feel new indefinitely.
