What year?

part of the body?
or
part of the transmission?

Believe there are three different size inspection covers for the transmission hump. 8/80-9/82, 1/82-4/85 ( in the US, most markets it was 11/84) and last 4/84-7/87. There are also three different shape boots to go with the covers.

I did not know that. I want to swap my H41 for an H55 in my 78 40 and will need to modify the transmission tunnel. I don't have the H55 yet, just trying to gather parts. I'm open to suggestions folks. Thanks.

most likely best to modify your current hump for clearance and the hole

you're going to need a few more parts than just the H55

Which H55F? You a running a V8 or stock 2F. There are options in 60 series inspection covers and 40 series inspection covers.

Which setup your is will help determine how to proceed. There are OEM options of mounting and aftermarket. OEM are harder to find. Not sure on cost of either currently. I located OEM bits before prices started going crazy.

Pictures with the white and red covers are 60 series. The white started 10/82 until 11/84 or 4/85 depending on the market it's from. 10/82 is the starting date for the H55F and the cover reflects the taller H55F transmission. Both four and fives used this cover. Same with the next generation but are harder to find because on the FJ62 this part is a direct fit when switching to a H55F. The two on the left in the first picture are a 10/82+ five speed on top a four speed on the bottom. This are raised as well because the H55F was being used in some markets. The transfer case shifter opening is the only difference. The five speed opening a little further back. The 60 series transfer case opening for the shifter is further forward. That because the shift tower on the 60 series H55F top cover is further back. With a V8 the 60 series cover is close to the original four speed location. 40 series places the transmission shifter in the stock location. With a V8 will be like conversions you see with the transmission shifter under the heater.

John, the OP stated he wants to install an H55 into his 1978 40 series, I'm thinking non of the lateroptions are going to work for him. He'll need to modify his existing trans hum to fit his aplication

Late model 2F block. The bell housing for the H41 I believe is compatible to the H55. I will have to modify the transmission tunnel but was hoping a 60 series cover might make it look less hacked.
Will know more when I have the transmission. Transfer case is late model with 38mm shaft.

I plan on modifying the tunnel and was hoping to make it look half decent with one of the 60 covers. Will know more when I have the transmission.
I would buy and get the H55F installed including the shifters before working about modifying the transmission cover. There are a lot of options how to go about the conversion. How you end up will determine what is the best way to modify the transmission cover. But if I had a 83 FJ40 would be searching for H55F that would bolt directly in. Occasionally packages like this show up.bought this one but have seen others.

Your 83 already has the correct crossmember. Being from RHD BJ42 would only need to straighten the bend in the transmission shift cane and switch the input shaft and bearing retainer. Not for the transfer case will end up a little further back but conversion to a five speed would be so much easier than a 78.
