Axle and birf fitting

Hello

I have some new axle and cvs I am putting in and the new axle is slightly longer (7mm)

My cruiser is late 1995 and from what I've read as it's after early 94 it should have the longer one from factory.

What am I getting wrong here?

The manual hub lock won't fully seat

The cv birf is the same size as mine I took out but the axle shaft seems to be 7mm longer

Prob for aussi spec 80’s different P/N for the shaft I assume all the 80’s are part time there?

Are all aussi 80’s part time or do some trims retain the full time? I have no idea.

It appears you have the longer CV joint (246.5mm) so it's likely that the stub shaft of your CV joints need a second groove for the snap ring machined into the shaft.

After doing some research, and deciding to go with Longs for replacement birfields, I went about trying to figure out how to install the Aisin hubs with the longer birfs. After several ideas and decided to go ahead and add another groove to match the location of the shorter earlier birfs. The following pics are of the modified long and the install.

1. upclose of the OEM birf and modifed Long
2. Installed and sticking out of spindle
3. Full shot of both birfs

Only 4/1994 - 1/1998 require the upgraded birf or second snap ring machining. The birfs on the earlier models have the second snap ring groove from the factory.

Early birfs still have only one groove but it is a different place to work with a shallower drive plate and with Aisin hubs without an additional groove. In addition if one uses AVM or Warn hubs no addition groove is needed with any birf.

So far I have found that the free wheeling hub seats perfectly and functions LOCK and FREE without this circlip installed. The circuit was on the car when I installed it and now the free wheel seems to hit it and leave a gap.

Is this clip really necessary or do I have to take the axle out, and shave 7mm off the total distance of the shaft on the diff side?

This is very frustrating as I need the car drivable tonight and I am considering leaving this circlip off and bolting the free wheel hub selector back without it.

Any help appreciated

"Shorter 80 series birf (4/1994 and earlier: PN: 43405-60120)= 238.5mm
Longer 80 series birf (4/1994 and later: PN: 43405-60070)=246.5mm

You can buy two new earlier birfs (no ABS ring--came stock on 1991-1992 rigs) or you can machine a snapring groove on the later birfs.

Birf snap ring groove width=3mm

New snapring groove on longer birf should start 13mm from the top of the birf."

Hey Kernal just seen your reply. That sounds exactly what's happening.

So from this I'm trying to figure out what has happened, and what I need to do. Do I have the wrong birfields for my late 1995 model. And to do now I have to machine an edge deeper into the hub for the circlip to seat deeper down just like the image you posted.

For a short term solution now, if I leave the circlip out and drive with the hubs unlocked obviously, is this going to cause any issues until I can remove and replace my old birf, and take the new ones to a machinist to get the deeper circlip added.

Nah your a legend mate, gave me the exact answer I needed right in time. Appreciate the guidance to Benos post. Everything back together now and on road. I have removed the axle from both birfs and on way to a lathe for the groove to be cut.
