I guess I never mentioned that both my wife and I grew up in Chicago. Im from the west suburbs and she is from Hyde Park. My mom sends us Portillos for my birthday every year. The best damn hot dogs and beef you'd ever have.
There is a pizza place on W. Mcarren and Forth called Di Napolis. It was called Bears Pizza and before that Rosaties Pizza. If you know Chicago pizza then you know the Rosaties name. Dont let the new name fool ya, this is still Chicago style pizza at its best. Give it a try and you will never eat Round Table again.
As for gyros, still not a decent place in Reno to get them.

I was so excited when that Rosattis opened, I tried it and was VERY disappointed. I grew up on Rosattis' for delivery...
Ive heard that Dinapolis was good, so Ill have to give that a tug!

Have you tried BJ's? Its VERY MUCH like UNO's...That is probably the best Chicago pizza that Ive had here yet.
Where is a guy on Gledale that owns a lil diner...he's a Chicago boy...he's got the roast beef with the Vienna juice...Its OKAY! I thought for sure that it would have been BETTER...he also has "chicago" dogs...he's TRYING. You might want to check it out, but youll see what I mean by "hes's trying".
NO ONE can be protillos (or the other Chicago BIG DOGS) I guess.
I MIGHT have to give it a shot one of these days!

I don't know on the avatar thing, go to your user CP and try to modify your avatar settings.
I actually never tried Portillo's hotdog, just can't get passed the Italian Beef with Cheese fries. Guess I oughta venture out of my comfort zone once in a while!

I dig on the Chicago dogs, but I agree that if Im hitting Portillos, im going with the beef sammy with the sweet bell peppers...
That Mr.t's place has the dogs and the gyros, so Ill get one of each just to MAKE SURE that I had hit my yearly FAT and CHOLESTEROL numbers!!!
On average, I GAIN around 3-4 lbs when I go home.
I get to a point where Im tired of eating and drinking beer and cant wait to get home just to clense my system.
Yeah, Its a GLUT fest, but hey...

Chicago pizza tastless?? Dude, why do you think all pizza places out here ask if you want ranch dressing to dip your pizza in? Because their pizza is CRAP! Pizza for me is all about the sauce, its got to be zesty and spicey. And the crust, stuffed pizza is ok but for me and most other people I know Chicago pizza is thin crust baby!
Keith, thats strange you didnt like the Rosties out here. I have never gotten a bad pizza from them. I too grew up on their take out back east, even went to school with one of the nieces of the owners. Its pretty damn close to what I remember but maybe my taste buds are ef'd from all the damn rach dressing I have eatin since coming to Reno.
The only place I get a hotdog from is the stand in the Oddie Lowes. Real Vienna Beef, now thats yummmmy.

Sinbads Hot dogs in Sparks is my favorite, I heard they changed owners but haven't been there since I got that rumor.
BJ's is in the Summit Sierra down here in our neck of the woods.
Yeah...I donno about that Rosattis but the one that we got...they really SKIMPED on the sauce and some of the fixins. It just wasnt what it used to be...I was talking to another guy from home, who lives here, and he recommended Dinapolis as well...Ill have to give it a try again.
Like Rusty Dan said...BJ's is in the new Sierra Summit mall and their claim IS their Chicago pizza...It is deep dish and VERY MUCH like Uno's back home.
I didnt care much for Uno's, but here in Reno...Its very WELCOME!
Lowe's actually has a decent roast beef sammy too!
NOTHING like the Vienna beef dogs! Gotta love those!
Its funny thinking back that Rosatti's pizza was EVERYWHERE in the Chicago-land area (at least in the burbs). Near my house there were 3 or 4 within minutes.
Zippy's pizza was a couple of blocks away from me and is now more noted for their "cheezy beef" sandwiches and gyros! Do you remember them? Their first establishment was off Roselle and Higgins in Hoffman Estates, and they had card table set up for seating. Now Ive seen theyve expanded to other townships and have LINES in the drive through. Nice to see!

Us guys out west have no idea what makes a good hot dog right?
Ill have some Portillos shipped to you...then you can make that decision for yourself!
I donno...maybe it just depends on what you grew up on...who knows!
ME, I miss the food back home...However, Im pretty hooked on the Vietnamise cuisine and L&L Hawaiian BBQ right now....could eat that stuff DAILY!
I had never had either back in Chi-town. Also...all you can eat sushi is UN HEARD OF back there and quite frankly...the sushi back there SUCKS from what Ive tried.
To each their own!
All I know is that Chicago really has NO SPORTS teams to boast about (at present!), so I guess the food is all they, arguably, can boast!

I think sometimes we miss foods we grew up with even if they weren't all that great.
I miss eating at Macayos Mexican restaurants, even though the food was probably average at best.

I havent heard of Zipppys. Damn I am cravin some good food from home right now.
I would have to agree the sushi in Reno is much better than back east. And the the Viet food here is good as well. The PHO777 is one of my favorites.
