Auto Windshield Wiper Behaving Strange

My manual section 2-3, MY2015 says this:

●If the wiper switch is turned to “AUTO” position while the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch is in IGNITION ON mode, the wiper will operate
once to show that “AUTO” mode is activated.

●If the temperature of the rain drop sensor is 176F (80C) or higher, or
14F (-10C) or lower, automatic operation may not occur. In this case,
operate the wipers in any mode other than “AUTO”.

for me if the window is anything other than perfectly dry, I see one sweep on startup as indicated.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......

108k miles and mine has never done this and the wipers are always set to auto (more often than not.) Weird.

Check the sensor on the windshield next to the mirror mount. From the outside you will see a rectangle with a gray background.. if there are bubbles in the gray background you might need to reapply the special tape in there.

Re-reading what cboyd posted, the wipers should not be doing this. I'll check the sensor.

Thanks.

My auto sensing wipers don't work like they should. I have noticed that if I wiggle the sensor box that is taped to the wind shield the windshield wiper's sensing feature will work temporarily. Mine also stays on auto and does a single wipe when I start the car too. I recently re-taped the box thinking it would help and it didn't. I also recently noticed that my rear view mirror's connection to the windshield is coming loose. When I grab my mirror is allows me to lift up on it. Anyone else notice the rain sensor or rear view mirror coming loose?

Any chance you had a battery reset and some customization changes were lost? I need to look at the options, but I don’t remember this being something.

like I said, mine won’t do it if the windscreen is dry, which doesn’t jive with what the manual says unless you read the next page and it says don’t operate wipers when dry... so maybe some undocumented logic.

To everyone having issues: is your windshield OEM or pilkington? Mine is the latter and I think the non-OE bracket bonded to the windshield is partly responsible for not getting a perfect interface even with new OE tape.

My VIN window doesn’t line up perfectly either.

For the loose mirror.. the glue-on lug is usually attached or it isn’t. There is a small torx screw to hold the mirror onto that lug.. might try tightening it.

I leave my 2013 in auto and it does not do the start up drill of one swipe.
The auto mode does function to my satisfaction about 98% of the time.
Occasionally, it gets confused but a reboot (off then on) resolves that.

I had a new windshield put in and the tape was looking pretty bad, so I put a new tape on and it still is not working properly. OF course it works fine at the dealer. IS there a special way to apply the tape? I can't get rid of the bubbles. For a fix I just unplugged the sensor and the intermittent works fine by itself.

When I had this issue we found that the metal frame that the sensor mounts on was bent. Re-formed the frame and issues went away.

My ancient 2008’s “auto-wiper function” works flawlessly...and seems to magically read my mind, knowing exactly when I want wipers, and when I don’t.

...Amazing sensor called
“my pinky finger.”
Highly recommended! :hillbilly:

The Auto wipers in my 2011 were awful, worthless, terrible. Still on the factory windshield. First thing I did when I got the truck home was unplug the sensor.

The Auto wipers in my current 2015 are much improved, but still get a little numb or trigger-happy sometimes. Off and back on usually gets them to behave again.

Hmmmm, my 2011 auto wipers work just fine. Sometimes they go a little faster then needed but i Think the work OK. Now that I fixed the chattering I actually use the wipers again.

My truck is currently at the shop to "hopefully" get my 2" suspension lift installed. As soon as I get it back I am unplugging my sensor. Thanks fo the advice. I will also look for the the Torx screw on my mirror and see if its loose.

I am going to assume they too can't free my single frozen KDSS valve. I don't want to get my hopes up. I am just going to wait for the dreaded phone call. I have already had two negative calls from different garages. I am hoping the 3rd time is a charm.

I had a lot of trouble with the bubbles too. Basically kept everything as clean as possible and sortof rolled it on from one side to the other. Then used a very clean butter knife to push the bubbles out. When going onto the windshield I started pushing on one side first then rolled it into full contact there too. One side isn't as firmly pressed as the other but I think that is the bracket as mentioned above.

Either way mine seem to work perfectly fine.. other than going into high a little sooner than I think is necessary.

My auto wipers operate with a mind of their own. The bad news is they're working as designed.

One other minor oddity in the design... when you use the windshield washers, the wipers will make one additional sweep a few seconds after you're done to clear any drips.
