They make great paperweights.
I'd never run 'em on my pickup, though. They're hard to maintain, and let go downhill. I recommend finding manual hubs either at a wrecker's or online.

That part is the brake shoe that is supposed to move the hub into the locked position when the gear on the stub shaft turns. The shoes are typically rendered ineffective by lubricants leaking into the lockout hub. Clean the shoe & it's corresponding friction surface with brake cleaner before reassembly. In some situations this type of hub will function intermittently even when in good condition. They will never be as strong or reliable as Aisin manual locking hubs.

I wasnt aware Yota made auto locking hubs on a 1980. Are you sure they came with it? I thought they started in 84.
I've seen them on a '79 I looked at, too. I think the axles get around, is what happens.

i

I bought the truck before my accident in april2010. i am now a quadriplegic..my friends took my truck wn i was in rehab and put all new brake system n got it to turn on.. Thats about as far as they got. My buddy told me the hubs came off a 85 runner.the truck had manual hubs on it but my buddy swaped them out so i wouldnt have to get out of the truck. But he never put them on for me.he used the manual hubs for SAS swap on another friends 98 pick up..i want to get this girl on the road so i can get back to what i love..this is what i got can i use them if so how? or should i sell them to get manual hubs.. Thanks for the info..

Gee, way to throw a wrench in everyone's logic. Why didn't you mention this up front? I'm sure now the discussion will turn to explaining how to make your life that much easier.

Cheers to you, and your dedication.

Dont like throwing that around makes every one weird ..as far as the truck goes my girlfriend will be doing most of the driving so it sounds like i should just switch back to manual hubs. Thanks for all the info.

No weirdness here. How can we further make your experience easier?

Yes, I still recommend you toss the Auto hubs. They are very unreliable, they unlock when you need 4WD, and lock when you want to stay in 2WD.

Here is what she looks like.forgot to mention the bumper. Its not done but look forward to finishing it my self!!! At least the welding part. The grill is all metal. I think its kinda cool just need to put a toyota badge on it n some new paint.also will i be ok on 32"s or do i need gears? I think its all stock.. Its got a 20r under the hood... 4 speed trans.

If u can, Get manual hubs. I just replaced mine. The auto's break all day long. If u got $$ you can get pair from wabb fab. Im sure there are other places. I got mine on craigslist.

I think the worse place to be is stuck somewhere because your autos took a dump. In those areas reliability is key.

Cheers.

The bumper is awesome! reminds me of the Reaver ships from Firefly (yeah, I'm a nerd).
The all-metal grill is awesome, too!

I agree with the suggestion to go back to manual hubs, even if you choose to leave them locked all the time.

But to address your original request, here is a schematic of the auto hub. The brake shoe is part of component #2 in the schematic. There appears to be another part to this component which i don't see in your pic - perhaps it is still in the bed of the truck? If it's missing, that might just be one more reason to switch back to manuals...

Good luck.

$130 for the pair? If so, and they're in good shape I'd jump on that.

you need to pm orangefj45, he sold me mine a nice good used set with a new set of gaskets for 75 shipped. dont hold me to that, but I would be surprised if it is much more.
