Aussie Locker Clearances?

At about this point I reached my limit for manual dexterity and my hands were getting pretty greasy, so I stopped taking pics.

With the thick thrust washers in there, my cam gear spacing ended up being less than 0.156 (5/32 drill bit was no-go) but bigger than 0.140 (9/64 drill bit was good).

In order to do the final testing of the locker to make sure it locks and un-locks, I needed to have the tires on to get the Aussie to lock and unlock. I tried spinning just the drums and no dice

Hope this thread helps others!

Thanks Paublocruise!

Great shots, I am installing one of these this winter, maybe one up front as well.
Good trick with the knife.

There are two clearances mentioned in the aussie install guide....1st one is the clearance between the end of the axle shaft cap and the center pin....I suppose that is for keeping the c-clips from falling out, so it should be tight. 2nd clearance is the gap between the two locker halves...
On mine, the 1st clearance is a touch wide, but the 2nd clearance is at .148" Seemed to work o.k., but it sure did ratchet a lot. (Diff out for new bearings at this moment...)
Cheers!

Interesting!! I found the other way when I did mine last week. With thick thrust washers I had no spacer to pin clearance and with thinner thrust washers my pin to spacer clearance was fine but the cam gear clearance was at the limit.

i couldn't get my pin in either with the thick washers .but i still used ones that left me at .0 tolerance at the end play of axle shaft . the cam gear was still closer to the limit than to tight . the locker has worked great .

pbgbottle,

Does your Aussie deliver the friendly clickety-clack when you coast thru corners?

just curious...

What year third member were you putting this in?

I was using a front third out of a '74...

It went in the rear of the '82 BJ60. That third member was replaced with a used front third member about 3-4 years ago so I don't know the actual miles or year of production.

i don't hear it much at all . with my thinner shims .i used to hear it all the time and it would always bang . now with it a bit tighter . it is very well mannered . still ratchets . but can hardly hear it . hasen't banged yet .new shims only in four 3 months . can still feel it between gear shifts . i am very happy with it now nice to coast into a parking stall and not hear a banging sound . where everybody looks at you like what the hell was that ?
