Are the seats really leather?

Funny thing...

Not to detract from the OP but Infinity markets their interiors as "Leather Appointed" due to some law suit in years past and the fact that they don't cover every surface in leather (so said the dealership). It isn't unique to Lexus/Toyota on these things. Gotta read the fine print these days and take nothing for granted.

I like the slippery nature of real leather (like my 14 LC) but the Newlux seats in my IS350 still look new (18k'ish miles so far) and they don't take much to keep looking nice.

I like real hides on my seats but there are advantages to both IMO.

On my 08 I can say without a doubt that the leather looking material on the side of my drivers seat is not leather because its getting worn and I can see the fabric backing. The material on the arm rest is also not leather because I have a little tear in it and can see its fabric backing too. Let me know if you all want to see some pics.

Exactly the point. Quite a change and I'm sad they seem to be hiding it with truly deceptive language. Feels bait and switchy to me. And I really like this vehicle!

I will ask dealer we are working with ( just to see.)

We seem to beat up interiors and leather lasts the longest and is easiest to repair or recondition. Given choice which would you choose a leather sofa or pleather?

And quite a bit further down the page in that release - doesn't seem to leave any ambiguity:

"Luxury permeates all three rows. The middle row seats are also trimmed in perforated leather and feature multi-stage heating and abrasion-resistant seatback material. The 40/20/20 split seat is built for comfort and convenience. It’s got a recline feature, and a one-touch tumble mechanism makes it easy for passengers to enter and exit the third row. When you need to maximize room for either passengers or cargo, the middle row seats also slide forward and aft 4.1 inches. The third row are 50/50 split fold-down leather trimmed with folding headrests with abrasion resistant seatback materials, which seats three occupants. With the middle and third rows folded, the Land Cruiser provides 81.7 cubic feet of cargo space."

First mention says leather nothing else. Not trimmed etc. I asked Toyota on their Facebook page. Just ordered mine and waiting for the lc to come in and kind of annoyed. Should be leather.

Wow. Cant believe this thread is still going. Its leather, people. I hear Range Rovers have really soft leather. Maybe an Escalade?

This may torque a lot of people off but the Softex has better durability than real leather.
It's easier to maintain and looks newere longer. True leather wears out, dry, rots, cracks , creases much easier than this synthetic leather.
Newlux is the same thing as Softex just the Lexus version...

I am looking at replacing the coverings on my daughter's new to us RX... I am now thinking that maybe I need to price it with "Newlux" and not leather, or price both to see how they compare...

funny you should ask....

there arent enough of these things made to warrant an attorney get all excited about a class action case - now if we all had camrys, we'd be in business. essentially, its a rich guys problem. go see for yourself...but once you have your seat deconstructed and discover that it is not an all leather construction as advertised, well, thats where it gets interesting. For me, its simple...dont sell me an all leather product when it isnt.

standby.

When I worked for Lexus I remember them using nulux or whatever it's called quite a bit instead of real leather. In their trim package training for employees you are taught what woods, leathers, and safety packages the vehicles have. The interior is pretty durable. When I worked for Infinity, the leather seats seemed much nicer as far as look and feel of the leather, but after a year or two showed extensive wear compared to Lexus interior.

Well, the seating surfaces are likely to be leather, but NOT the same as the leather used in say, a Rolls Royce. The leather used for many years in most automotive vehicles is very thin (so it's soft & pliable), but it has been painted/sprayed with a plastic-type dye. It is NOT vat-dyed, thick leather, as it's very poor quality, hence the sprayed-on "finish". Once the painted dye stuff wears off, the actual leather is exposed and it is usually an ugly grey color and not too attractive. I believe what we have can legally be called leather (part of a cow in there somewhere), but that is really stretching the definition.

If we didn't have ventilated seats, sitting on this stuff would be just as uncomfortable, hot & sweaty as funky old naugahyde.

So I had to look up Aniline..... Mmmmm - yeah - more of that, please...

A colorless, oily, poisonous compound used in the manufacture of rubber, dyes, resins, pharmaceuticals, and varnishes. Aniline is an amine of benzene. Chemical formula: C 6 H 7 N.

I love the synthetic seats on my 2009. Easy to clean, no creases, no marks. Still looks new with 140k miles. I wish they had put more support into the seat, making it as comfortable as a top of the line V12 Mercedes/BMW. Especially with seat massagers. I have been trying to find a way to add more support to the seat. I bought a memory foam seat back cushion but it didn't help (I use it for a headrest now).

You do know about the adjustable lumbar, right?

I only ask because I've had family members miss the lumbar adjustment on their vehicles twice. ;)
