Appropriate winch for 60 series

Hydraulic winches are the only way to go. Pulling speed is my last concern when I'm stuck. I like the 100' of 3/8" cable and the fact that it will never overheat under constant pulling.

I've been running the Warn XP 9.5 on my FJ60. It works great, I like the 6 hp motor, fast speeds under load, supposedly better sealing, less weight and a cheaper price. It needed to be "offset" in my ARB bumper by "moving" the holes/slot off center but the end result is a clean fit and low profile.

I put 100 feet of synthetic line - less than it holds, but I figured it results in less wraps/more power/less amps when pulling and less uneven spooling issues. I still prefer to use the snatch block if I'm pulling hard, lower gearing, and less amps means easier on the winch and battery.

Plus, I picked up another 150 feet of 3/8 synthetic to carry as an extension. It's very easy to handle and carry. It's LIGHT. I haven't needed to use it yet. Of course I also have the original wire for another extension. I won't need it until I head North into those endless AK mud bogs. Meantime, around here, I usually only need a short tug over a short distance.

If I was using a winch all the time I'd prefer a hydraulic or PTO but for the casual winching I need in California it works great. Two thumbs up!

Can you notice the offset fairlead?
(the sloppy chain was being used to drag logs off the trail)

I'll be putting on of the Warn 9000 or 9500 pound winches on the '62 as soon as I can get around to it. If I can make it happen I may get the the XP9.5 that AKWHTBST took of of his '60 before he sold it to CHWTOY. ;)

All this info is great, really helps a lot for someone who has no practical experience with winches.

I am looking more seriously at the 9/9.5 winches. They look easier to install, lower profile, and if the 9.5 is actually sealed better, that is the way to go.

Seems like you could pull it apart and silicone things that should be better sealed anyway.
Description says: "......Full face contact drum seals, motor and end housing gaskets deliver extreme-duty water resistance....""........ the longest duty cycle and fastest line speed of any WARN winch under load.........."

Maybe it is worth the $150 extra, any body know if there is really much of a difference between the 9.5xp and the xd9?

anybody know if there is really much of a difference between the 9.5xp and the xd9?

The biggest diference I am aware of is the motor. The xd9 and 9i uses the series 2, 4.6hp. Where as the xp uses the series 3, 6.0hp.

I'm going to buy a 12k pound winch because if you were as stuck and as alone as I was as late as it was as unprepared as I was the other night in snow, you would too. It was my fault completely and I was an idiot for getting myself in that situation, but I could have gotten out if I had a powerful winch and some snatch blocks. I figure that since I AM GOING TO BE spending that much money, that I may as well get the biggest baddest mofo I can. I don't know much about winching so I'm definitely going to be finding someone to run me down on all aspects of winching dynamics before I pull 1 foot of line out of it. I have heard a lot of good things about the 8k series warn winches, as well as Ramsey and Mile Marker. I'm going to go with Warn though because they have the greatest reputation I've seen when it comes to winches.

I love my 12k warn never let me down BUT it did lower the front some ..also had a 8274 in the past and it also pulled great hard to pick from those but since the 10k and up bull bars is no more you better do the 8274

if you had look up from under my fj62 you would have seen my M12k mounted in a non arb winch bumper. we used a universal 12k top of the bumper style winch monting platform and fit it into the arb. I would suggest picking up the mounting platform p late form warn for what ever winch you decide to get then fitting it in there.
i love my 12k it has pulled me out and others out of alot of different jams. my rig hovers around 6k as well and getting it up and over car sized boulders ?i hav ehad to snatch block it. you prolly won't be beating on your 60 that hard but I would just rather be safe than sorry.
i got mine off ebay for $450 used 3 times, divorce she got the house and garage and everything in it sold everything.!!!

I think the verdict for me is,

I will stick with Warn, parts and service are based on this continent and they seem to stand behind their name.

If I happen upon a good deal on 12,000 or 8274, I will go that way

If I buy it new I will get the 9.5xp due to the lower weight, lower profile, better weather sealing, the recommendations from this board and the fact that I kind of like rigging. :D

Thanks again everyone:cheers:

I bought my FJ62 with a mechanical winch OEM here in Egypt,it comes with a 3F engine normally aspirated, the winch comes very handy almost everytime we go wheeling, encridible power and it doesn't get overloaded, it has smal part in the connection to the gearbox that acts as a fuse if you ever overlload it.
It gts its power through"Power take off" from the gearbox H55F, I don't know if this is available in the States.
Regards,

Xtreme-that is extremely cool. All the USA t-cases come with the PTO gear in the t-case, but no PTO's came here with the 60 or 62. If you have a spare and want to send it my way, I'll put it to good use.:D

BTW-I was in Egypt for 3 weeks a few years ago and loved it. I can't wait to go back.

Anybody remember or have a link to a post by a guy who presented the military guide to winching (may have been a year or two ago)? When I read it, I thought it was pretty authoritive. It had pictures and guidelines to everything from the math behind winching to the proper use and techniques. I have done a search for it and can't find it again. Appreciate the link if somebody can find it.

Radd Cruisers is a vendor here and he's got a PTO for a 60 series for sale. Complete factory setup including the factory PTO bumper if you wanted it. That's a straight bolt on. I bought one of them off him- I think he only has one left now.

I want a winch.

Me too. :)

Reviving this old thread since it has most of the info I was looking for. Is anyone besides Lowridetide using a Warn 8274 on their 60?

I picked one up for a nice price and have always heard it's a very good winch. I'm thinking of using it on my 62 but wonder if it obstructs air flow too much.

Experience, advice, comments encouraged.

Thanks!

If an 8274 makes your 62 run warm because of airflow then your cooling system needs work. Shouldn't be a problem.

I am also running the 8274-50 on my 1985 FJ60.

Thanks Greg, just wanted to check. Never had any problems running warm and don't want to start now.

Thanks for the pics with the 8274 & ARB, they look good. I don't have an ARB but it seems like it'll work for me too.

I bought a Warn M12000 24volt for my HZJ.
