apathy of RHD JDM owners

Hello everyone, my name is Andy and I live in Calgary, Alberta... To be honest, I don't drive a truck or for that matter a Toyota at all, but my g/f does own an 82 Toyota 4x4 if that will help me out here ;)

I have a JDM Honda CR-X, that I love terribly. I'm not some punk kid who's into street racing or anything of the sort. I'm 31 years old, and I am just simply a CR-X Enthusiast. I've tried to get some serious discussions started on a local forum here in Calgary but it quickly disintegrated into:

"JDM Cars suck!"
"No they don't!"
"My Talon could eat your GT-R.."

You get the idea. Anyways, it seems that most people out here just don't care about becoming legally responsible. Most are just kids who complain about the government and can't offer any real or substantial information... Taking the time to really investigate the matter to see what can be done to make their cars legal is a joke to them. I care about whether or not I can legally drive my car, and I'd prefer not to until this matter can be resolved.

I've seen on other forums that people are doing 'ghetto' mods in order to get past all the regulations (one guy even told me in a PM that he was going to 'engrave' SAE on his housings to get past it -- lame!). I would prefer to 'beat the government at their own game' and use their own regulations against them in order to drive my car, which I feel not only meets the regulations but exceeds them in certain areas because of safety modifications I have done to the braking system.

I stumbled across this thread and have seen you are all in the same mind-set and unfortunate position as I. You all have a JDM ride that you genuinely WANT to have conform to the MVSA.

I would like to join y'all in this fight (if you'll have me that is) against what I see as the government's desprate attempt to appease the motor vehicle dealer's associations cries of 'foul' and maybe make some great press in the fight against 'illegal street racing'.

You can view what I've already learned and done at my website:

Let me know what I can do to help!

I know I'm probably hy jacking this thread But hey this is important stuff to us JDM owners.
We NOW have issues in Ontario. According to the link supplied by jhmed (thanks by the way) the registration of all JDM vehicales maybe temporarily suspended in Ontario. Follow the link he supplied to find out more..along with the person to wright letters to and / or contact by phone.
What we need now is an official document stating the temporary registration suspension.
I wonder what happens to us that have vehicales registered already???????

Why no association? Very simple: dealers/curbers/individuals have sold and continue to sell "non-conforming" vehicles to largely unsuspecting buyers.

Do they really want to call up their former customers and invite them to join an association that will tell those ex-customers that the truck they bought as road-legal has lenses that have to be changed, headlights that point the wrong way, DRTs that were never fitted etc. etc.?

Uh, somehow I doubt it.

The curbers and individuals can say, "Sorry, I didn't know/caveat emptor/whatever".

The dealers on the other hand would be stuck with doing the mods that they knew were required, but didn't do, and in some cases can't do.

The authorities are not stupid, there are too many of these vehicles on the road to try to pull them all off.

If they wanted to harass RHD owners they could very easily do so under the current regs., but that would cause owners and dealers to become politically active etc. Not the desired effect.

The objective in this is to shut down, or at least drastically slow down importation either by a change in the regulations (which is in the works I am told by Transport Canada) and/or by making it more and more difficult to get the vehicles into the country and registered.

This, I have been told, is why there is no RoRo space in the middle of summer when there should be LOTS of space. Toyota is buying it all up I was told. There are other 'stakeholders' who have the resources to buy up all the space they want to for the forseeable future.

Containers remain an option, but much more expensive.

As posted elsewhere, Australia has recently changed from a 15 year exclusion to a 25 year exclusion.

I've been doing some talking to some other CRX enthusiasts in the USA and something they told me that may (or may not) be applicable to your guys' vehicles, BUT, certain vehicles in the USA (and one model of CRX in particular) were manufactured with 2.5mph rebars -vs- 5mph we have here in Canada -vs- NONE in Japan. I'm beginning research right now and will post my findings as they come in.

What I'm looking at is what the regulations state is the minimum required for certification under the CMVSS, and Alberta Out of Province Inspection Guidelines, and whether or not this 2.5mph rebar could be fitted to my car. I'm hoping that this information may be useful to some of you even though at this point appears to be CRX specific.

Was just wondering if a JDM group was ever set up...

The JDM group has been set up - there are 40-50 members now i think. I am waiting for some info from a company that does SAE testing on lenses - should know soon what the cost would be.

Here is the link:

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/RHDTLC/

The group is slow but will pick up from time to time as the gov't sends out thier letters and pass new reg etc.

Regards.

oh, i have not recieved an email for quite a while so i assumed it died...
my mistake.

what kind?
oh just something to keep a bit of interest happening...an update of somesort...
with Alberta accepting "E" codes now the problems have MOSTLY taken a back seat again. we still have small issues like the rear lights on the 78/77 models but nothing serious...
so i can see apathy kicking in again here...

i was planning on being an observer on that forum, i shoot my mouth off enough here...

Hello,
I am VERY new to this board so forgive me if I don't know the 'rules' yet....I know nothing about any of this, and just bought a JDM Prado. How might this affect me? Can anyone post a link to point me in the right direction?

ETA: I just requested access to the Yahoo group. Sorry, didn't see it before.
