Anza Borrego - Pinyon Mountain

Hi Guys,

A few of us from the Fallbrook/Temecula/Murrieta area are going to be doing Pinyon Mountain to O-wells - and them cross country to Borrego Springs. Some will also be camping out at Borrego Palm Cnyon ( group site is reserved). Coyote canyon is on the agenda for some Sunday morning.

We will be meeting at the Pinyon Mountain trail head around 9:00 a.m. if anyone is interested feel free to PM me

Thanks, I think the weather for the next few days may be at it's best over the weekend. However, the current Radar for So Cal. looks just plain flat out nasty.

I also appreciate your warning about flash flooding, been in a few slot canyons and seen tree's wedged 15-20 feet up high from flooding so I do keep that in mind.

Me either. Do you know the width of an 80, folded mirror to folded mirror?

I know several FJC's have made it with minor scrapes to the mirrors.

Well, I will take my tape measure so we can see what the actual width is. I know that a Early bronco will fit through and I drove a 85 Montero through with a few inches to spare on each side.

Ive driven my XJ through it also. If a FJC can squeeze through i dont see why a 80 wouldn't. Just takes finesse and a good spotter.

Yeah but doesn't the FJ taper in at the tops more than an 80? My fear would be hitting the passenger side rear windows on the rock face when your DS tire goes over the boulder. I have never seen the squeeze in person but from the video and pics I have seen that seems like the problem.

I thought the two 80 series shared the same bodies.. track width should be the same. Are the flares different? I would love to try it but I like my flares. Any way, I might be in the area this weekend with the infamous Goob. I've got his 40 sitting in the back yard with new parts he wants to try and break. We were going to head out that way but hadn't really planned anything. Maybe we will cross paths. Blue 80 with ARB, rack and lights, might be towing a beige 40 with light bar and canvas top. lol.

Yes they are. The 90-91 flares are obviously the narrower version.

So a 80 is only 1.5" wider than my XJ was. (not talking about the flares, since the lower portion is not the problem on the squeeze). I think like Mark said, it was the further most rear window that was the problem. I had a few people standing on the side of the walls of the squeeze pushing my rig away from the rocks.

Took the tape measure and it measures approximately 85" with +- correction about 1.5". The issue is with mirrors and the angles that you experience when dropping off the ledge

We had one FJC that wisely decided against trying it after starting through. One of the bystanders indicated that he recently watched three FJC's go through and only one made it through unscathed.

Bummer for the wider tracked vehicles, cause that trail is so much fun and never gets boring.

can you enlighten me as to where specifically this squeeze thing is and whether that's the only way through on that trail?

and I imagine the taller the truck, the worse too, given your description above?

It's on Pinyon Mountain Road just before Heart Attack hill. The trail is one way only. (as if you can get back up through the squeeze. Taller the truck the more it leans into the walls. yes.

Do a google search and you'll come up with tons of photos.

When I finally screw up and do some body damage to my truck I will give it a shot. I am flareless and lined so a little scrape could be doable. I would probably need someone to stand on the DS of my Hanna bumper? Oh and I will most definitely document it!!!!
