Anything worth doing while I have the front bumper off?

Took the bumper off. (That thing is flimsy!)
Anything I should do while it's off?
I can see the A/C dryer well enough, but seems like it would take some major bending of hardlines to raise it. So that might be for another day.
I'm cleaning a bit the inside of the frame rails and will spray copious amounts of lube or antirust agent in there.
May do the clever turn light mod probably too.
Anything else?

(dang, the rig looks so much better with the bumper off. Nice approach angle too. I think some minimalist front bumper may be the ticket here. Didn't John S do something like that?)

Take the opportunity to liberally soak the A/C condensor fins/radiator fins with degreaser/cleaner and the ability to get a spray bottle of Simple Green practically against it is nice. It may help penetrate back into the radiator fins better than with all the stuff in the way.

Somebody was able to simply loosen the circular bracket holding the dryer and simply slide it up quite a bit without bending. Now would be the time for that.

I'll see if the grille can come off easily, might be easier to clean the coils.

While it's off maybe you could have a frame rail mounted rack fabricated to hold an ARB box ..

OK, pushed the dryer up about 1". The weird bracket holding the dryer is still as low as before so if that one catches a rock it'll still likely break the dryer off or bend something. So, not much gain there. And I had to cut the back or the marker light housing to let the dryer go up. Not a big gain really. May not be worth bothering with this.

You need to cut off the bottom of the dryer bracket, otherwise moving the dryer up is a wasted effort as snagging the hanging bracket on a rock would likely result in the same damange as snagging the dryer itself

I got 1.5 inches of additional clearance without having to cut up the turn signal light housing. Have to carefully bend the refridgerant lines to accomplish this.

Get a real bumper?

Sorry, someone had to say it.

well, I cleaned up the coils, moved up the dryer (may or may not cut the bracket), did the turn signal mod, and generally admired the rig without front bumper at all...

that's that....

I've got something you can do, how about, take the big box out of the cargo area, unpack big bulky metal thingie, bolt it on in place of stock bumper! :D

the metal thing? Oh, I threw that away! just needed the box! :D

Trim the frame back and fab up an ultra tight clearance tube bumper. Post results and design specs :flipoff2:

yup, the ARB is nice but a bit chunky. Some small bumper would look great.

I did break down and shorten the dang bracket so at least I got an extra inch there... :D

Do you like the bumper on Shortbus? Something similar is on the way from Slee .. no date on release though:frown: . But it should fill that niche of owners who don't want something as clunky:flipoff2: as an ARB ..

:)

I took this opportunity to install a make shift bug catcher grill to save the radiator fins. This was installed directly behind the factory grill. Works great for those flys big as Mini Coopers! Every so often I'll just tap the bug catcher and everything sluffs off.

they ain't no stupid turn signal no mo'. Now they are stupid marker lights! :D

since you're at the front end, I'd wire brush/prep and protect (from corrosion the power steering cooler.

shoot, now that's a good idea. Wish I read that while the bumper was still off. Didn't look bad, fortunately. Oh, well... Did yours rot?

mine rotted and I patched and then replaced it with a tranny coler. I wrote about it in some thread last Summer I think. Land tank did the best (in my opinion) replacement but my hack (in comparison) version is working just fine.
