I just bought some ammo cans from the surplus store for general stuff for the cruiser. My wife just about had a cow when she saw them, she said that they were ugly and she didnt like the fact that they had bullets in them. I showed her the pelican website and the Zarges cases website to which she said "Yea I like those better you can get some of those."
now that I have the blessing of the :princess: I need to figure out is there somthing better out there? so this is what I am looking for.

1. I will buy this onece and it will last a life time.
2. a storage case that is Bomber!
3. you can strap it to the outside or inside of the vehicle
4. must be weather/waterproof
5. altitude purge valve

thank you in advance

Yup, should work real well. Not sure what colors they come in though.

Check out Storm cases: http://www.stormcase.com/

Closest competitor to Pelican AFAIK, and comparable product range.

I used pelican cases and have been very happy with them.
They tend to be a bit heavy...but I think all similar cases will be the same.

Otto,

If you go Pelican get the newer style with the double throw latches. Do not know how many times I have fought with the old style latch and it won.

The Storm cases are very comparable to the Pelican but I do not know of there customer service or warranty values (have seen some at other units). I also have a couple cases from Snap-on at work that are nice and an off-brand, will check when I return on Monday.

Biggest problem areas with Pelicans to date: weak locking tabs, tendancy for the hinge and handle pins to work out, and as stated earlier they are relatively heavy. Just my .02

I use a Pelican 1610 for traveling with underwater photo gear. It's flown as checked luggage to Asia, the Caribbean, Central America and Mexico. All Pelican cases are water proof and built to last forever. Mine has wheels and a handle. It's perfect for what I use it for, but it weighs 35 lbs empty.

When I was shopping for a case I compared the Pelican and Storm and settled on the Pelican. The Pelican weighs 2-3 times more than the Storm and my impression was that the Pelican is much stronger.

SKB also makes nice cases. I use one to transport my shotguns when I fly with them.

Pelican

For what it's worth....I run 1510's, 1610's and 1650's and an assortment of older cases for both professional use and personal crusier use. The 1650's are SWAT ops cases and store everything from MP's, to gear, to comms and they've seen all kinds of ops, weather conditions and do the job as they were designed for. The 1610 and 1510's I run in my 60 and Sammi (I know), but they are tough and have never failed. I've never used the Storm cases, so I can't comment on them.....I've just seen the worst case scenerio on these cases and have decided to invest in them for my use.........good luck.

I have two storm cases and two pelicans. Overall, they are about the same size. I used them on a recent Canada trip and one of the Pelican's leaked. They were both strapped to my roofrack. Sent it back and got a new case - no questions asked. Storm cases worked fine and did not leak.

In terms of overall quality - I'd say the Pelican's are better built. Storm would deform slightly when loaded and the Pelicans never did that.

Ammo can is still the way to go for the duty you describe. Paint it pink if the wife wants it pretty. How pretty is a muffler, a tool box, or a spare tire? And if she's upset because there were bullets in it... ??????????

No purge valve but it's not needed. The can will easily stand up to any over/under pressure and will still open when under suction. It'd be simple enough to install a valve if you wanted.

Personally the hard storage cases are a bit too heavy for my tastes.

First i would evaluate what goods you plan on carrying that NEEEEED to be protected from crushing. (i know most of my crap doesnt need that kind of protection).

Secondly- if the main concern is waterproofness....there are many soft containers that are very tough, pack very well compared to hard containers, take up less space, and weigh muuuuuch less.

In the end-- i ended up with one smallish briefcase size case for camera-film-ipod-watches-and a few other odds n ends that could use the protection that a hardshell case offers. Everything else like camping gear-spare parts-bike shiat-food- etc all get soft storage thats much easier to stow and throw in and out of the cruiser.

One other main advantage to soft packs are compartments. Much easier to split up your stuff than have it all jammed in one hard case which needs to everything pulled out to find the wrench buried at the bottom. I definitely prefer more moderately sized packs to one large for the reason of organization. Varying the colors of the packs helps more as knowing RED is the kitchen-Green-camp tools- etc etc.
Makes life much easier.

Pelican are tough cases and their protection of gear goes beyond just water. Dust, impact and security is why I use them. Plus they're very comfortable to sit on when your stuck somewhere for a long period of time.

I've used duffle bags for years, but the gear always gets smashed, wet or just thrown about which results in lost time looking for gear.

I will agree that p-cases are heavy and bulky, but it's worth it when you can jsut grab the case you need and open it up with all your stuff organized.

Good luck.

I can't believe it took 14 posts before somebody busted his balls about a wife that had veto power over an ammo can purchase. Dude you should just carry your spare birfields in your purse.

You make a GREAT point about veto power. I think its a fair trade considering when we first got the 80 it was going to be just an intown vehicle. considering I have convinced her that we need a winch, bumper, LED lights, roof rack, sliders, rear bumper, snorkel etc. etc. I think that giving up an "ugly" ammo can for a "cool" pelican/other case is somthing I am willing to live with. :flipoff2:

I went to Lowe's and got a Contico X-treme Tuff 50 gal locking box.

It's not "water-proof" - as in - if you submerged it you'd be screwed. BUT - I use this for my trail/camping gear, and I've had it in the back of the truck in heavy rain, snow, ice, etc, and nothing has ever gotten wet. Since it's not pressurized it doesn't need a releif valve. It has a keyed lock. It's virtually indestructible. AND it costs a heck of a lot less than a pelican case!

Here's my truck all packed up for the long trip from Illinois to Moab.

I have a pelican 1650 and I like it a lot. I keep all my small stuff in a tool bag inside it and everything else is just thrown in it. I like this setup because it is much easier to strap down one big box than strap down five soft bags of all various sizes. We also use pelicans at work to ship things all over the world with UPS and they even stand up to that abuse.
