Hi there
I'm thinking about taking my rig on a road trip through Baja.
Has anyone been in the past year that has some helpful tips?
Thanks!

I was down there a few months ago and can't wait to go back. I spent 10 days camping down there in April and went to Ensenada for 4th of July. Hopefully we'll head back around Thanksgiving or new years.

I was down in March for the Baja 250 and then in September for a last minute SCORE race (San Felipe Challenge).

For March trip a buddy and I went in my Cruiser and crossed at Mexicali around 11:00 PM and rolled into ZOO road around 2:00 AM. All went well and all though cautious never felt in danger.

For September four of us rolled down in two MasterCraft chase trucks on a Friday morning. And although 100 degrees and 90% humidity it was a great trip with no issues. Plus one truck driven my McCacran won and the Pierce truck had to be repaired by our chase team and took 5 hours to get back to camp.

I stopped driving down in 2008 and have flown into Cabo since for surf trips but after seeing this video I am having my doubts about any trips. This is a gun battle that took place at the end of October in Cabo I found on Baja Nomad.

I am headed to mainland MX, Guadalajara for Thanksgiving weekend. I will report my experience from their and flying In & Out of TJ. I expect it to be a great experience with the Pan Am games just finished.

Have fun, Guadalajara is part of the colonial cities with lots of history. established in the 1500's. I have family there. If you have time try to spend a day touring the tequila distilleries, truly a fun time, and you can even jump on the tequila tour train from GDL.

Yeah, we are exploring the old part of Guadalajara Thursday and the Museums, Friday we are going over to Tequila but not on the party train., Saturday we plan to head a little ways out of town to where the market goods are made. Sunday we have brunch then head to the airport.

Well I can report back that the :princess: and I are home safe and had a great trip to Guadalajara. But at the same time this happened LINK during our stay although it never affected us and would have never known if we hadn't picked up the paper. Our taxi driver who took us to the airport Sunday told us that something like that had not happened in years.

On a side note, our last day at our hotel we did see a Toyota Tacoma with a camper shell from Cali who was obviously overlanding down main land Mexico.

I just spent 10 days all over Northern Baja, pre-running and racing the 1000. Nothing but great times...no issues at all (besides the 4 hour wait returning to U.S. on Sun in Tijuana).

We had a great race. Ended up 1st in class 10. I drove the San Felipe section (Borrego to Borrego). That new Penhall Class 10 car is very fast and fun to drive...we were even passing class 1s! Can't wait for next season.

Ended up using the Land Cruiser to pre-run San Felipe after we broke the pre-runner in the first 10 miles. It did great although it was pretty slow in all the big woops (pretty much the whole way). I think I'm going to add some of the new FOX internal bypass coilovers and use it for pre-running more next year.

Thanks for all the info - Haven't been on the site in a few months and I guess if I had just waited a few more days and checked back I would've seen all the responses.
Is anyone going down this month that wants to take a rookie along on a caravan or something?

I just went yesterday, and had a great time with friends and great food! My wife and I walked across, our friends picked us up and we headed down to Rossarito. We walked the shops in Rossarito to work up an appetite then hopped back in the truck to the South end of Rossarito to Tacos Jr for some great Mexican sea food. Marlin Sopas were delicious. Four of us ate and drank for $40
We then walked some more shops before continuing down to Porto Nuevo.
Once in Porto Nuevo we walked some more shops before going into Ortegas in the SW corner of the port and sitting over the crashing waves on the balcony enjoying drink after drink. After a few drinks we ordered some more food and enjoyed the beautiful ocean views. Our bill for 4 was only $80 with lots of drinks. :)

I should be going again March 9-11 for the: 26th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250.
This would be the ultimate of Baja trips and you are welcome to drive up with my buddy and I in my Cruiser or bring your own Cruiser. I have friends that pit for the two MasterCraft trophy trucks so we will probably be hanging with them and catching the trophy trucks from two or three location. It wouldn't be any surfing but the views of the Sea of Cortez are spectacular! Sunrise on the water is epic!

Thanks for the update and the invite. I will be in touch - things are up in the air right now, but the gf and I really want to leave the US for awhile. We're really looking to find some remote trails & beaches...
Cheers!

We got back a month ago from a week long trip.
No problems at all. We were about 10 hours down. We generally do not spend much time above El Rosario.

We had more difficulties crossing back into the USA (apparently all Sportsmobiles are supposed to go to secondary) than any of the checkpoints in Baja. Not a big deal though...

We can't wait to get back!

Another great trip to Baja. Got back this afternoon from a weekend in San Felipe for the Baja 250. Rock Star / Mastercraft Safety's Rob MacCachren took home 1st place once again for the third time in a row! So the team was pumped and now are tied for the lead in points.
On a cruiser note it looks like Joe Bacal didn't finish according to Race Deserts Twitter.

And since we love pics
