want some feed back on the gas milage , i am getting very tired of the rust on my 60 , to the point of trading for a stock rust free fj60 or 80 . fawking rust .

My 0.02 as a noob. If gas mileage is a concern you do not want a gas 80. Expect to get around 12mpg in the city and 14 on the hwy. Some have said they get a bit better than that but some say worse (on mud). I would love a diesel 80 but they seem to be double the price here.

Still, I knew I wasn't buying an echo so I have no regrets. And my pathfinder didn't get much better anyway and the 80 is far superior.

i owned an 84 gasser 80 for a while, very nice ride, decent fuel milage about 18 on the highway and s***ty in the city...
LOTS of power.
stay away from 1990-1992 units, no power and TERRIBLE fuel milage

We get about 17 MPG and thats with a part time kit installed, i ride my bike to work.

i have a 94 fzj80, awsome ride best vehicle, only weakness is gas mileage....but its not a smart car, if fuel economy is a concern i would not buy one. i've had mine since around april, pros def... out way the cons, i'd get one and forget about anything else.

my long term plan would be a diesel swap , i just cant get into a rhd i would think there must be a market for some one out there to buy rust free southern us cruisers and swap in toyota jdm diesel power plants , i have been searching the larger southern us craigs list sites and have found a few possible canditates , i would really like to find one with a dead engine and just tow it home .

did any of you guys pick your 80's up across the line i have looked up here at ace auto sales and even thought the owner "koz" seams decent enough the price gap between his and the ones on craigs list are huge for example he has a 94 fj80 tripple locked involved in one accident interior pretty trashed he is asking $12,000 , i have seen a tripple locked 80 in sacremento for $7500 i am pretty sure i wouldnt use up that much fuel driving back up here !

The 91-92 make good candidates for a diesel. They are affordable.

The 93 up had more power but the 15% headgasket failure they talk about in the 80 section puts me off. Like owning a 22re.

My 91 sucks fuel. Power is ok. But I am used to a 3b, and sluggish mercedes. I WILL be putting a 1HZ/auto combo into it.

14 was my highway normal.

My hg went at 166k 3200 got a fully rebuilt topend, new cooling system alternator tuneup. truck runs like new & as the bottom end showed almost no signs of wear the motor is most likely good for 200k+

Part time kit was over $500.oo and with a Center Diff Lock install took about 5 hrs.

i've had one for 5 years. great truck but then I had a 5 km commute until this year and most of the miles were weekends. very reliable. i lost the h/g to a pinhole rad leak but not ebfore the truck gave me warning i ignored. otherwise, it has never failed me. did the head gasket myself and it builds character ;) and also amounted to a total fuel system cleanout which improved performance and mileage a lot.

that said, i bought a 91 lexus as a commuter when i moved to the okanagan because the mileage will kill you. I am using the 80 to trailer to vancouver and back tomorrow and expect to drop $200 at least in gas

there is lots of feedback in the 80 series section on mileage. the 91-92s are just brutal - same as an fj60. the 93-94s are 12-14 in town 16-19 hwy. the 95-97s add 1-2 mpg because of better ecu control.
it's all about how you use the skinny pedal.

there are also links on how to import into canada in the 80 section, i know because i did a blow by blow write up. it is not hard but a little scary. my seller concealed body damage which pissed me off when i arrived in salt lake city on a one way ticket to collect it. i would try to buy one in the classified section here if i was going to geta another. you have better odds with mudders than the general public especially if he has a high post count, and you can get some good deals on built trucks if that interests you.

ace cars

stay away from ace cars, and get a rig of a mudder. before i bought my clean 80 from cali...which i bought off a dumb lawyer here. i went to ace cars, u should see those cruisers when they first arrive on the lot and before they "" on "" service them. they're absolute sh*t. stay away.

just my 2 cents, i got lucky with mine, the guy i purchased it from used it as a grocery getter, and didn't even realize it had diff locks.....didnt know what the switch/dial was for.
