:DHi all, dont like my auto in my 4runner. Is there a conversion kit out there? Would love a 5sp with that supercharger. thanks for any help.

According to 4WD Toyota Owner magazine just this month, the wiring harnesses are different btw. 5 speed and auto rigs, among other things. I'm sure anything is possible with enough $$ and sweat.

I think you'd be best off selling your '01 and getting a 5-speed '00 or earlier. In Colorado, 5 speed models aren't super rare - not common, but not impossible to find. I see you're in Michigan... home of the S10 Blazer ;-).

yea...the S-10 and the blazer. Just some of that s*** Detroit has been feeding everyone. They area joke.

However... why would they make different harnesses for the 2 sub models. How much difference could there be?

It's a computer controlled transmission. The engine ECU and trans ECU usually "talk to one another" with these types of setups. I have a 00 auto 4 runner myself, the 5 speeds are really rare. I looked for months for one and gave up before we bought ours. But my wife drives it primarily anyway. I drove one with a 5 speed and a supercharger once, it was quite impressive.

whats the deal with everyone getting rid out manual transmissions?

When walking thru parking lots I just love looking thru windows to see what they are running. Lots of jeep and other 4x4's are mostly autos now.

its a damn shame...

Because the new autos are better transmissions than the old ones. Test drive a new Taco with the 5 speed auto and the 6 speed stick and tell me where the stick outperforms the auto...

Besides the "it just feels better to drive a stick" argument it's a hard sell. Sure the manual has a lower crawl ratio but I guarantee the auto will out crawl it because of the converter slippage. I guess in case of a bad starter you could push start a manual and you can't an auto but your SOL if either of them loose the battery or alternator.

Hell the auto will even down shift going down a hill if you lightly touch the brakes for several seconds in a row, and if that's not fast enough just grab the shifter and put it in whatever gear you want...

for me its not about weather or not the trans can read my mind or not. Its about complexitity. Not shure I should be talking about it because I think I cant even spell the word right. But a real manual trans does not have cooler lines and all kinds of bull s*** electronics. If I want to downshift I will do so, I don't need a computer to sense what my brain is thinking and do it for me, I am very capable of using 3 pedals with 2 feet.

Some people like auto and some like manual, but there should at least be an option, and if not than it should be easy to convert.

Don't know about the Autos in the new Taco's because i went straight to manual, but the Six Speed is sick. It is plenty low in
4-low. Most of the time wheeling i keep it in second, unless its really steep and even then i have to give it a little gas in 1st. On the highway, the truck does 80 in 5th gear at like 3400RPM, and you still have a Gear!

You spelled the word weather just fine. I'm a little confused why you keep mentioning transmissions though. :flipoff2:

Yeah but that would be ignoring the other plethora of complexities and bull**** electronics that are in in every new rig made. Once you realize just how much is computer controlled on a new Toyota truck; whether or not the transmission needs bull**** electronics to work becomes a moot point...

This I agree with particularly since these vehicles are already made with manual transmissions in other countries. They should at least be available as an option here (even if it is at a premium since that's how supply and demand works). Not sure how easy we should expect the conversion to be though, newer vehicles just are more integrated than older ones.

Oh and I'm with you on the liking a manual for off-road vs. an auto, I just like the feeling of control and simplicity.

I was wishing for a torque converter instead of a clutch I had to slip last weekend though. When I was buried to the frame in snow and being winched out while trying to maintain engine RPM without wheel-speed. The guy driving the 80 in our group had a much easier time doing the same thing...

Buy the way good discussion, nice to see some people can keep a level head on the Internet.

whats landtank talking about? I say the word transmission to much? Yes, you could say that I am a die hard manual fan, but thats just my feelings on the issue. Everyone should have an option.

My reason for disliking the auto in the 4runner is when your hotrodding and boosting its hard to control the trans shifting, and there is one less gear.
????????!!!!!!!!

You spelled - Weather -

like the Environmental condition when you go outside.

Whether is what you wanted to spell. Whether or not anyone else wanted to know.
