That is correct. Pretty easy to replace, mine now works. Sometimes. Some time in 96 they went from cable anchored in antenna to toothed cable that can be removed and easily replaced.
I have the former which is no good. Cable is crimped in drum and a nightmare to replace.
The 97 cables can be had on Ebay for about $20.

Dang, now you tell me. I just did the procedure on my '97 taking the antenna assembly apart and getting the broken cable out as outlined in the link. It was not all that easy because one of the screws stripped out and it took a while to get it all apart. It would have been nice if Mr. T had made the coax running to the head unit detachable at the motor assembly. Hard on the back leaning over the fender to get at that thing. But it works like a charm now. I got a new antenna with the toothed plastic cable from ebay, cost almost $50 with shipping. It is even easier than described in the link.
The secret is you don't have to remove the remnant of the old mast that is inside. There is plenty of room for the old left overs and the new one.
Just remove old mast. Loosen bezel nut, pull up and if necessary use the up antenna button. Insert new mast with the teeth facing the center of the hood. Use down button to insert. Tighten nut.
Done
I bought a replacment for my '95 thinking '95-'97 were the same. Negative. Hornd is correct.
My '95 is geared and the one ordered is not. So, i have a brand new - still wrapped up sitting in my parts bin.
