Another Rear Sill repair by a novice!

Having viewed the various posts on this subject I'm giving this repair a try.
I've ordered quarter panel patches, rear sill from Cool Cruisers.
Expecting parts this week.

How sad it is that a PO would simply let a fine vehicle simply rust away. My '70 looks almost as bad and will go to a body shop soon for this repair. I simply don't have the skill set or welding tools.

Here is a tech tip,... Use a copper backing plate when tack welding the panels together. It will prevent blow thru and absorb some of the heat and prevent panel warping.

You can clean up the tack welds with a bit of grinding and try again. Have fun!

I did this repair on my kid's '77. Did the inner and outer in STAINLESS STEEL. Will never have that particular problem again.

Any tips on aligning the door hinge holes would be appreciated. I'll be using a rear quarter patch panel as a replacement.
I had to cut out the spot welds on the lower right inner bracket to remove 3 of the 4 bolts that broke off.
Nothing like a spot weld removal bit, heat, vice grips and Kroil oil!

Subscribed, about to do this same thing to the 1976 I just picked up. Look forward to seeing how you like the CCOT sill and patches, I'm currently trying to decide who to go with for replacement panels.

My only frame of reference is the '78 I hope someone with a passenger carrier will chime in and verify dimensions.

I just did one on a 1964 fj40 and I had to cut way into the corners . I was wondering if you are planning on doing the same i think I got mine from real steel .
