Annoying sound since putting on new tires (I'm stumped)

That is the fill hole, gear oil should be up the the bottom of that opening. Stick a dipstick in to check condition of the oil. If it is an amber color you are fine. Locating the source of the hum will be tricky and freshening the grease in the ujoints could make the noise go away. It is probably a combination of the added lift /driveshaft angles along with wear in the pinion and u-joints.

If one is bad... same age, ect seems the best course would be to do both or the second will soon follow.

Update: threw her up on a lift, took a listen with a stethoscope. Definitely rear left bearing.

Great to hear that you clearly identified the source of the noise. Even though these rarely fail, it would be best to do both now. Also, inspect your rear brake shoes and parking brake function while you're in there. Might as well rehab it all at the same time.

I would do them both. The diff has to be opened, The c clips pulled. Then the wheels, brake drums. Then they slide out the axles, pull the seals and bearings. It's pretty easy.

I'd say its a day for a mechanic though. May end up getting new drums, shoes when in there. So keep that in mind. Any bad wheel studs, now is also the time to knock them out and replace them.

I had wheel studs, pads, drums seals and bearings ready for when I did mine. It was weekend job. The hardest part for me is taking off the drums and loosing the brake shoes thru the back of the backing plate.

Also sometimes the brake pistons are leaky or need to be replaced.

Start with Onur (@beno on here) for all your Toyota OEM parts needs. He will tell you what is NLA and what is good to go. Think of it this way, OEM parts lasted this long, aftermarket MAY but you are pretty much guaranteed with OEM. Do you want to do it once and be done with it or have to do multiple times in the next few years?

Georg E with Valley Hybrids (@orangefj45) is another source for parts as is Kurt with Cruiser Outfitters.

Glad you found the source of the noise. That can be frustrating.

As mentioned above, if you're going to tear into it, might as well do both sides.

We have the kits in stock. They come with the OEM Koyo bearings and NOK seals.
