Hey yall. Just picked up this 278k miles all original 83 fj60. Matches my 100 series :D. Definitely needs some love, I need to fix the clutch pedal sinking to the floor. What kind of work do yall recommend I do on it to refresh/tune it up. Want to see how long I can push the 2f without having to rebuild it just yet. Ideally I will do a smog delete and eventually put in a new carb, any other suggestions that yall may have? Thanks!

had it been sitting for long?

as most would say make sure you base line all major systems. make sure brakes are in good working order, do an oil change air filter change. check plugs and wires. make sure there are no vacuum leaks. if it’s been sitting for a while or if there are signs of wear change belts and hoses. stuff like that will make it safe and reliable (ish) to drive. from there you can play with modifications and refresher projects.

This. Congrats!

If the clutch pedal does nothing, it is likely a bad master or slave. Both are easy to rebuild or replace. Slave is on the passenger side of the bell housing, check for fluid right under it or in that area. Good to replace the soft lines on the braking and clutch systems too when you have the systems open. Could also just need adjusting.

Power steering pump may be leaking from the front seal. New ones are $$ or impossible to find and have the same defect anyway. I went Saginaw and don't regret it at all, conversion kit available from Georg @orangefj45. But that is down the road.

My '83 was sitting in a field for 25 years, and after baselining it's now my daily. Good luck!

What he said^^. Consider having a couple fuel filters on hand to swap out as you burn the gas out of the tank. New clutch slave and master cyl. (cheap parts), replace both.
Bleed the brakes, old fluid is probably pretty dank in there. Not urgent but consider replacing all gear fluids: F&R diffs, Transmission, transfer case.
Adjust valves, set timing.

It has not been sitting for an extended period of time, roughly 7 months. It starts and runs good I just can't drive it because of the sinking clutch that I can't shift the gears. Where do you recommend either rebuild kits or replacement parts for the cylinders? I see them on rockauto from Aisin, which is usually a good brand afaik. I did see some power steering fluid in the backseats so it actually might be leaking.... rip

Yep! Planning a lot of work on it. Really want to push the engine as far as possible as is! I think preventative maintenance now will probably be best.

Try Cool Cruisers of Texas in Rowlett or Cruiser Outfitters for clutch parts and more

Rebuild kits from Cruiser Outfitters / Cruiserteq.com, FJParts.com, Mark's Off Road (call by phone). Would stick to the specialty parts vendors on here for things like master / slave cylinders or rebuild kits, as they will know the ins and outs of your rig and your chances of getting the wrong part are not insignificant with places like Rockauto. Plus it is a good turn to support the vendors who are helping keep our rigs on the road.

Rockauto is fine for stuff like brake pads / shoes, fluids, etc. but their return policy is garbage, even if it's their fault they require you to pay return shipping in a short return window.

Aisin is a good brand and OEM. But like most manufacturers, the supply chain has globalized and some parts just ain't what they used to be. Personally I'd rebuild a factory part if I can before replacing it. Lots and lots (and lots) of info on Mud to keep you busy.

One additional thought - have you filled / bled the clutch system first to make sure you don't have air in the system? Or is it obviously leaking somewhere?

I looked at the clutch and slave cylinder on cruiser outfitters... $200+.... will have to look into a rebuild kit probably. To be totally honest with you, no. This is my first real manual project car. I actually haven't seen anything leak under it in the last day of actually having it so didn't think of that. The master cylinder is full of fluid but I'll try to bleed what I can....

Fluid is cheaper than parts :) At least it's a starting point!
