That is quick install. Do you have picture of side of the console? To see how console from 91 fits 95?

ToyoDIY is coming up with the following for all searches on 90 through 97 Cruisers in the General and Japan markets , so I am assuming one from an earlier model FJ should bolt-up with an FZJ. Mine came out of a 92 or 93 IIRC.

83208 PANEL SUB-ASSY, ROOF CONSOLE METER
83208-60010-42 SABLE, TRIM4* 1 $176.81
83208-60010-B6 LIGHT GRAY, TRIM1* 1 $168.35

You do have to trim some of the hard headliner and put in some holes for the forward bolts, but it is not a difficult install at all. As you can see with the inside view, if you are modding to put in switches, there is plenty of space for the depth of the Mr. T style ones.

Mot if your looking to sell it PM me and ill take it off your hands :grinpimp:

I have a used console with the compass/altimeter in it, but do not have the magnetic sensor nor the rest of the stuff. So unless you want to just use the console cover for other instruments/electronics or just want to use the altimeter, it wouldn't do you any good. :hillbilly:

steve- thanks for the heads up on the wiring. going to tackle that when the sun comes up...
yan- I'll take a side view pic of the console mounted in a bit also. like steve says, you need to cut some holes in the liner to fit everything but the cuts are all concealed by the mounted console. I just cut forward to expose the forward bolt holes...

Altimeter and compass look useless in your truck, more practical in mine used for freeway commuting. ;)

Honestly, it looks great and I'm definitely jealous. It's one of the few JDM mods I really like. I'd totally go for just a console if someone had it floating around...Mot?

Great tech write-up!

suueeet-
there's a guy up in BC that has some OEM visors I might pick up... but he only wants to sell with the whole console system. if I end up w a spare console I'll let you know.

side photo as requested...

You 95-97 guys are lucky. I have a 91 and my roof material is soft. Much easily done with a hard liner. Looks very nice fesus. I'm like mot, I don't have the sensor or wires. Just for looks.

As I might have said before I NEVER use mine.

But I'm sure if I didn't have it I would look like the girl a couple of posts above, looking at the greener lawn of the next door neighbor.

I seriously am contemplating getting rid of the gauges and putting in two or three useful gauges (water/oil/exhaust temp, etc...)

Still, this is an extremely clean installation (looks better than some which came that way from the factory.)

FWIW... hopefully you never remove it because the cutouts made will be visible, ask me how I know. ;-)

The girl in post #27 looks familiar :hhmm:

so on my 91 fj80, i have the cloth pillar which is glued, and has no exposed wiring behind it, where do I run the wiring harness?

I believe there is a hole on the top of pillar A. That is why you don't see wires and that is why i never installed the wires on mines. Too much of a pain. Good luck.

well I have a boroscope and a wire snake, perhaps meticulous use of those to make it work?

See what I mean it's a headache. You could run it just the way the picture is and put duct tape. That just might work.

I purchased the compass/altimeter from Russia without knowing that it requires the "compass brain". Does anyone know what this is? Is it something that can be fabricated? Is there a part number?

I realize that this outdated technology is silly, but I think it is a cool touch that adds (hopefully) a bit of uniqueness to my vehicle.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The compass requires the antenna and cabling as you can see in the first post. Did you get all the plugs with your overhead console as well?
Someone who is using the overhead console, can you pls advise do the sunvisors need to be replaced as well?

That was a few years ago and I no longer own that truck, sadly. As I recall I cut the headliner away where you show a bolt going into the headliner material. I think there was a bracket that I had to mount beneath the headliner to mount the unit.

If you want the easy way..

After searching the forum and reading all that seemed relevant I'm going to attempt to install my OEM overhead console. The unit is the compass and altimeter variant rather than the sub-tank version.

First things first, I'm going to break this thing down and clean it thoroughly with goof-off.

The next thing I'm going to do is head to the hardware store and buy some spray paint to try and match my oak interior. I looked for an oak trim model console for a long time and never had any luck.

My plan is to drop the headliner, install the magnetic field sensor and harness, modify the sun visors (I've seen a thread about doing this somewhere), and wire the unit into the switched power from the sunroof motor.

If anyone has suggestions or experience with this install I'm all ears.

I picked up one of these kits for Julia's truck (with visors) - but don't have the metal mount bracket - I'm assuming that's really just for the sensor? Will the headliner support the sensor without the bracket?

Having a hard time finding it in a parts catalog to get the part number. (found it - it's 89439-60010, NLA)
