1978 FJ40 2F
Production date: Nov 77

The OEM part for my year FJ is discontinued and the specs list it as a 12 volt 40 amp. The replacements I am finding are 65 amps. Does anyone know where I can find a 12 volt 40 amp alternator for my production year?

I know I need to replace my voltage regulator as well so if anyone can suggest where to find the correct voltage regulator for the correct alternator I would appreciate it. SOR and CruiserCorps do not have them either. Thanks.

I think you have the terms back ass wards. My 1975 calls for 12 volt 40 amp. I replaced mine a couple of years ago with a rebuilt unit from Napa. I think it was under 30 bucks.

If you are dead set on keeping it OEM those alternators are easy to rebuild.Any shop should be able to do it

This.

If you're not dead set on keeping it original/stock, then there are benefits to running a later, higher-output alternator.

Ha! I sure did. Fixed it. You found both the alternator and voltage regulator at NAPA? I'm checking with them today.

Is there a voltage-regulated alternator that works (both F and 2F) so the voltage regulator can be eliminated? Or maybe I’m way out to lunch lol.

Edit: I’ve found and studied Rudi’s threads on alternators, so electrically it’s explained well that it’s definitely possible. So I guess my question is about physically will one of these modern alternators fit (pully position, mount bracket position, etc etc) the older engine (specifically the F engine)? Thanks.

The regulator I bought rebuilt from toyota. I see Auto zone has a couple for about $25. Napa probably has them also.

Yes, you can get one for a Fj60. I picked one up from Rockauto a couple years ago for my 72 with a 76ish 2f. Bolted right in to the stock mount and the wiring was pretty simple. Plus it is a 60amp vs. the stock 45amp. In my 69 with a 74 F.5 I used a ford alternator with a one wire converstion since it fit on the passenger side mount for the long gone smog pump better than the GM style alternator.

@middlecalf :

If you have an F engine with the alternator on the driver side, with the pivot bolt mounted down near the oil pan, you have to use the older style alternator.

This is due to the location of the clamping bolt on the slotted arm. On the older style, the bolt is located let's say at 2 o'clock looking from the rear (like the picture below) and the pivot bolt at 6 o'clock from the rear.

The newer style alternator (mounted high on the passenger side) has the clamping bolt at 12 o'clock with the pivot bolt at at 6 o'clock from the rear.

If you try to use a newer style in the older style location, the slotted arm hits the alternator case well before the belt gets tightened as you try to swing the alternator away from the water pump sheave.

Do you have the model number for that alternator from Rockauto?

I used a Remy 55amp alternator part #REM14340. The internal regulator was at the 10 o'clock position which worked for me since the alternator was mounted on the passenger side of the engine. They currently show it to be out of stock but there are two others in stock under 1985 land cruiser.

You can also swap the front covers between Toyota alternators to "clock" it into the correct position. I swapped the cover from a 2F alternator onto my 1F alternator so I could mount the alternator on the passenger side using a 2F bracket.

Here is a later model Toyota alternator in the 1F position with a custom curved bracket - I just shortened a standard bracket from O’Reilly. Initially intended for a non-Toyota alternator where the straight bracket hit the alternator case.
