carnage report

Proffitt John and Colorado/Oklahoma Kurte and still rollin' up here in Alaska. They have covered almost every highway in the state from the one end to the other - well done! One more dinner together allowed us to document the carnage. Did we forget any trail issues?

Included are 5 min. fixes to 5 hr. fixes - all rigs were repaired on the trail and everyone made back to pavement under their own power.

40 - Rob
40 - Luis
40 - Mark
40.5 - Dan
42 - Charla
60 - Chad
60 - J.P.
60/62 - Roger
62 - Brandon
62/79 - Proffitt John
70 - John B.
80 - John L.
80 - Darrell
80 - Todd
100 - Paul

Rob's 40 - leaky airbag, mis-aligned 4-link, fuel selector valve

Luis's 40 - runability, auto choke solenoid/fuel injection

Mark's 40 - birfield X2, battery cable/starter, elec. fan motor, exploded hub, lock-rite failure, shift linkage

Dan's 40.5 - fuel leak X2/runability, fuel selector valve, blown bead

Charla's 42 - leaky radiator, radiator vs. beaver pond, clutch fan

Chad's 60 - fuel shut-off inop.

Not J.P.'s 60 - various

Roger's 60/62 - trunion bearings X2, loose rad. hose

Not Brandon's 62 - rubbed rad. hose, fuel injection wiring, fusable link, broken motor mount, broken leaf springs

Proffit John's 60/79 - loose drag link/penny fix, 2X tow strap breakage = grill, radiator, winch solenoid headlight

John B's 70 - N/A! - John, you're the reliability winner unless we forgot something :-) Oh, here ya go - spare tire carrier latch failure - get your sh*t squared away before you come to Alaska next time :-)

John's 80 - fender flare trimming, wet distributor?

Darrell's 80 - u-joint, headlight wiring harness fire

Todd's 80 - tranny before Trek

Paul's 100 - alternator

Note: Two problems we've experienced on past Treks - engine trouble due to water intrusion at river crossings and communication issues due to use of multiple types of radios were NOT an issue this year at a all. Every rig was snorkeled and sufficiently waterproofed and everyone had a 2 meter radio. When something is not a problem, it's amazing how soon we forget. Well done Trekkers!!!

He had some wonky light gremlins invade his rig... does that count? :p;)

Well after five weeks of being on the road, I'm finally home in Oregon. I've started to process my photos. I didn't take very many since I was mainly driving. But here are a few. Below is my son Daniel and my dad fishing at the beaver pond. Next picture is below the beaver dam of Darrell fishing and the rigs in the brush. I'll work on the glacier pictures next.

I've been very lucky with where I have been able to visit - Antarctica, Alaska, Canada.

Here are a few highlights from the Picasa web album that my dad is starting to put together. He has a lot of pics but something call "work" has gotten in the way and he hasn't had much time to spend on it. He seems to think this "work" thing is important. Gotta pay the mortgage I guess.

Over the Hood!

Mowing down 8 foot tall shrubbery to avoid the slick, muddy, soul-sucking clutches of the ruts.

I Made it back to Tennessee yesterday. It has a great time and I want to thank Mark and the AK Cruiser Crew for all there hard work putting on this great event and Mark for the use of his shop so I could fix my front end and take the 2000 mile road trip with John and Kurte.
I only blew one trailer tire on the way back, lost my trailer licence plate and broke a head light.
The border crossing back into the US south of Winnipeg was really fun, 3+ hours. First they x-rayed my truck then had me back up to the dock and 3 agents went through all the vehicles, never said what they were looking for, maybe they just wanted to look at all the great gear we had. The two issues, first was the Moose sheds that Andy and Luis collected. They told me I needed a permit to bring them in from Canada, I told them that they were from AK, so they asked for a receipt, told them we picked them up on the trail and they said I needed paper work to show they came from AK, when I questioned what paper work and who should issue it they changed the subject to my shot gun, told me I should have stopped on the way up north and registered it so they would know that I did not buy it in Canada, can a non resident even by a gun in Canada, any way I showed them my permit from the Canadians to take it through Canada and they let it go.

Awesome picture indeed! Is that an HDR image?

Yes, it is HDR. After looking at it after processing it, I think I can get a better image if I redo it. I'll repost when I get a chance to get back to it. This whole "work" thing is really getting in the way of my "hobbies."
