As some keen observers here have figured out, I bought Joe’s Troopy. Joe dropped it off Sunday night at the hotel I was staying at. Plan is to drive to Fit Garage in Bend, OR to cut the roof off and install a alu-cab pop top. Left Monday morning at 0445.
“good morning Mr. Troopy, today is the first day of your new life, let’s do this”

Day one destination, Farmington, NM. First time driving a HZ. I understood the power limitations of a normally aspirated diesel, especially when you are constantly climbing from roughly 500ft to above 7000ft and headwinds most of the time.
I stopped regularly to check under the hood and around the vehicle for anything bad due to the Troopy having been sitting mostly for the past 4yrs.
Found a fuel leak coming from the fuel pump return rubber line. I think it was still the original. The hose clamp had cut enough into the old line that it started a leak on the firewall side. Found a parts store that had a hose cutter with which I cut about 3/4” off that end. This stopped the leak. Win. While driving I kept thinking about that old line and could it start leaking at the other end? So stopped at another parts store and replaced that line with new.

Maybe 50mi east of Albuquerque I stopped for fuel again. Shortly afterwards I felt a sudden loss of power, I know the word power is funny when referencing a HZ🤣, thinking I blew a head gasket I pulled off the road. Checked the exhaust, still smelled like oil/diesel, pulled the cap off the overflow bottle and reved up the engine for a while and didn’t see any air bubbles. So decided to continue, limped it into Albuquerque, things still working so continued in the slow lane to Albuquerque. Some point on the hwy to Farmington the engine suddenly got its power back again. I’m thinking something came loose in the fuel system and caused a partial blockage. What a relief. Anyway, made it to Farmington.

Day two was to Twin Falls, Idaho. Drove through western Colorado, eastern Utah and I-15 to Pocatello to Twin Falls. Didn’t plan on going to Pocatello but had a brain fart when the turn off came, oh well got to see Pocatello too🤣.
Drove through Moab, the scenery was pretty amazing. I liked western Colorado too, and I-15 to Pocatello. I think my favorite was the valley before getting to Pocatello. Moab was just too busy for me. Always knew Moab was popular but still was amazed at how much buildings and shops and people there were.
Stopped in at every Cruisers favorite store.
Day two;
752mi. 14hrs

Today, definitely noticed the continued descent. The hwy 20 is an interesting drive. First was farm country, then maybe 50mi of canyon carving, then mostly a straight road till about 30mi west of Bend.
Dropped the Troopy off at Fit Garage. A friend picked me up there, went to a late lunch then got dropped off at hotel. Tomorrow back to ORD and back to work Saturday. Was fun to get to see NM, western Colorado, eastern Utah (Moab) and parts of Idaho from the ground vs from the air.
473mi and 8hrs

Wow! Didn't see this coming! Congratulations on the new addition to the family!

This begs the question of what you are planning on doing with your pickup that you have poured so much time and love into?

All the best with the troopy, I look forward to your new build thread and all the antics you get up to! ❤️ :cheers::clap:
