Dirt in the tank is an interesting idea. Is there a drain plug on these tanks? My truck is almost 40 years old and I imagine there must be some crud in there.

My 2/71 has a drain plug. I do not know if all years of the tank have this plug. Just be warned! Run the tank almost dry before draining it as you will need a container big enough to hold however much gas is in the tank.

I'm planning on doing a carb rebuild of my 79-80 soon. Is there a link to the manual for the later year carbs?

I'll look for the drain plug on my tank. I'll do this before the rebuild. I'm glad you mentioned it.
