Aftermarket Liftgate Garnish/Trim

I'm not particularly fond of the chrome trim piece on the rear liftgate.

I suppose the trim piece could be removed and color matched. If the raised lettering were knocked down as part of the process it could even be affixed with emblems from an earlier series (e.g. 100).

I did see this option and was wondering if anyone had tried this or has any opinions:

Looks cool, but not $320 cool.

Slee painted his trim and emblems with black plasti-dip. It looks sweet, and only costs about $3 in paint.

+1 on the plasti-dip. As soon as it warms up around here. Also thinking about trying to rig up my own version of the popular "Satoshi" grille mod found on some other toyota rigs.

Perhaps one of these:

With one of these floating around somewhere in that mesh area:

The grille is cheap enough to throw away if I screw it up or if it just sucks and I can always add the emblem to my garage collection.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but this got me thinking.

I like the stock grille, but the stock grill does look good blacked out with plasti dip.

Edit: +1 on the FJ40 emblem. Keep in mind that is a pretty big emblem. Maybe too big for the grille.

'13+ will have cruise control radar sensor + camera built into the emblem on the front grill.

I would like to see alternatives to the OEM rear badging too.

Please do a write up if you do this. I have thought about how to plasidip the lift gate garnish around the letters but hurt my head thinking about it.

Oh man. Easy peasy. Just clean. Mask with tape. Spray 2-3 coats (watching for overspray). While still slightly wet, remove tape. Allow to dry. Vollia

My brother in law owns a business that does powercoating, alloy wheel repair and refinishing and custom autobody. I think he'd cut my nuts if I plastidipped.
He said he'd paint the rear chrome trim black and then body color (grey) and then sand the grey off revealing the black and then clear coat. Sound complicated but they said easy.
