Wondering how many in the forum, have added longer springs to thier FJ40. Seems acouple of my mates have put on Chevy S10 springs & like the ride.

Remember all... or any of what I told you about the fitment and performance of stock springs, aftermarket springs, modified stock springs, FJ55 springs, FJ45 springs, FJ60 springs, Hodge podge oem/S10 springs, 1980s 3/4 ton suburban reverse arch front springs front and rear, Chevy 1 ton springs (original configuration, leaves added, leaves removed), 54 and 63 inch Chevy springs 53 inch Ford springs and all the other stuff I've bashed together under the '40s?

All of which I have done. And used. And found what worked and didn't work under the conditions and in the environment that we have here.

BTW, you don't have any mates running S10 springs under their '40s. Kevin's has one or two S10 leaves added to OEM '40 packs. Worn out, abused, welded together in the field multiple times (I've done it at least three times when we broke them in the back of beyond) and oft replaced and re-re-configured.
If I am remembering correctly right now, it was the King remote reservoir shock that made Kevin's ride become not brutal, rather that the actual spring packs. In my case it was the Chevy heavy 1 ton 54 inch packs, -1 in front and +2 in back... with the very long and very flat angle shackles.
And my rig has never had that particular kludge that we did under Kevin's (S10 leaves mixed to OEM packs). He may have changed that all up again now that he has the Aqualu frame. But he still does not have "S10 springs".

Anyway... 😜😝😲😵‍💫😮🥴

😝 😁

1980s 3/4 ton suburban reverse arch front springs front and rear,

Hi Mark. Bit of a tangent to the original question. What was your opinion of the function of the front reverse arch GM springs up front? Did they cycle similarly ie not reduce range of travel? I can see that being an interesting option for a low front soa but wondering if they gave enough droop to be worthwhile

To the OP regarding s10 springs. Info I see is they are about 54” long 26/28” to center pin. That makes them about 10” longer than stock. You’d need to set up your hangers then play around with adding leafs to get the spring rate right. Like any other custom spring setup.

Thanks for the inputs. I have a SOA and the original springs. I am looking for a suspension that is more flexible. Not particularly looking for enhanced offroad. (i’ve got an 80 series on 44’s). 35’s on the 40 are just fine.

Some of my friends with gen 1 gen 2. 4runners have gone with longer springs & wondering if folks with 40’s have gone this route. What was the difference in ride & what was the donor ?

If it’s a rockcrawler and the goal is cheap springs. run an f150 spring backwards. It really helps with flex.

If it’s a higher-budget rig, go deavers.

I also recommend run a longer shackle ABOVE the frame. This is really common on mini truck pre runners. The goal is to have the rear spring eye higher than the front to minimize rear steer and increase stability.
