ACL rod bearings after 150k kms.

Thanks Lowenbrau, I now understand what you meant before.

You may be onto something there Gerg with the angled injection on the 1hdt maybe playing a part in all this. Looks like it's the main variation between the three 1hd variants apart from 12/24 valves.

Tapage, I don't think the pistons would be interchangeable due to the angle the injector sprays into the bowl of the piston

So if the cause of the issue is injector angle would it be possible to modify the injectors to have a different spray pattern?

I just got around to doing mine yesterday. They are the replacement ACLs that I put in about 140,000km ago. I use Rotella 15w40 mostly, and sometimes Chevron Delo 10w30. Since it says to use 10w30 on the sticker that Toyota saw fit to put on the air cleaner, I think I'm going to stick with that more in the future.

As you can see the #1 bearing has a nasty little groove all the way around. i found a small burr on the crank just about opposite the oil passage. I suspect that burr had been there since last time I changed the bearings as I recall #1 having a bit of a groove that time too. I figure I hadn't found it then as I put it down to a chunk of the de-laminating bearing doing a couple laps around there. This time I found the burr and carefully filed it till all was smooth again.

As for the other wear, it looks like some very minor pitting on the tops of all the shells. Pretty consistent between them all. I wouldn't call it scary looking or on the verge of failure, but I think replacing the BEBs is going to be a 150,000km maintenance item for me.

Do you have the labels reversed on your paper towel, or are the upper bearings really in worse shape than the lower ones?

You'd expect that. Combustion acts on the top ones.

I am sticking my nose in here, but I was talking to long term elderly Toyota nut head the other day and ( I am not sure if this is the same diesel engine) but is this the motor that has a housing the sump bolts onto and in turn that bolts onto the main block?

If so he said the problem of the bearing spinning in the journal is because the oil channels don't line up between these two components that feed oil to the journals, they need to be drill out to align them so to feed enough oil (they apparently overlap) which restricts the oil flow?

Wrong motor or barking up the wrong tree?

I think it is the swirlchamber/piston design.

1990 1HD-T used Piston PN 13101-17020
1995 1HD-T used Piston PN 13101-17040
1995 1HD-FT used Piston PN 13101-17080
1997 1HD-FTE used Piston PN 13101-17080
All used the same rod, I think

I dont think the problem exists to the same extent in any engine with a piston other than 13101-17020

An update and correction on years as part of this discussion:

9001-9208 Piston PN 13101-17020
9208-9501 Piston PN 13101-17040
9501-9702 Piston PN 13101-17080
9702-9801 Piston PN 13101-17090

13101-17080 subs up to 13101-17090 in EPC

No sub up from 13101-17020 to the 17040 which makes sense as the injection system part numbers are different as well in the 9208 change up date for the piston bowls.

I wonder if they recognized an issue and changed up the injection pump/injectors and piston bowl design to try and address it in 9208. It would be interesting to have block numbers to correspond with BEB pictures to see if there is a correlation.

1HD-T Injection Pump Change

I am due for the 100,000km service this winter and will be doing the BEB's at the same time, using the Taiho bearings mentioned in this thread. I have ACL Duraglides in it right now. Best I can figure from the block number thread is my 1HD-T is early production post 9208 as I have the newer IP number and no red paint in the Turbo crossover tube.
