How can I check to see if it is in need of Freon?
Like to check some easy DIY stuff before having to take it to a shop.

I think you can hook a pressure gauge to the high pressure end of the compressor hose but its probably cheaper just to buy an AC charge can at autozone and see if it helps. Just make sure its for the right refrigerant that the LC uses.

Here is a free check you can do if you don't have gauges on hand to at least get you started in the right direction:

The air conditioner shouldn’t lose Freon. It has a leak somewhere I’m betting. I’d check the lines to the rear. It cracks and all the Freon leaks out. I’m guessing you need to cap it or replace the a/c lines.

Gigantic assumption here with a massive regression fix. It could be 50 other things. Sure it's a common failure point, but who knows at this stage?

Thanks. I do have some AC gauges but don't know what to look for for what is normal or low on freon.

You can look up on YT, hook it up and post some pictures of your readings. Set fan to medium speed and close recirc door to outside air check vent temp.

Sight glass are no longer a good indicator of anything on a R134A system, reason why you don't see it anymore.

I had a pinhole leak in my condenser a few years ago. Refilling with refrigerant got me a few days of function but ultimately needed to replace the condenser.

First think to check is refrigerant level, then pressure test for leaks. Finding the leak shouldn't be too terrible. Aren't there UV dyes available for this?

Another thing that MAY help is cleaning the evaporator. I've read some posts where folks used the toyota ac power foam kit (PN - 00289-ACRKT) and it fixed their cooling issues. I just picked up a couple kits from local dealer the other day and I'm gonna try it on my rear A/C to see if it solves the 'not super cold' cooling issue. Some folks also have found the drain for the rear evaporator is clogged. Just another possibility....

It’s happened on all three of my 100 series landcruisers. It’s a common issue.
Telling someone to prepare to cap lines to rear is just a bit much.

Let's help troubleshoot as it could be anywhere in the feet upon feet of lines, two evaporators, condenser, coils, compressor, etc. etc.

I recently had a local mechanic do an AC pressure test and refill on my 2014 LX570 (w/ about 115,000km). They found that it contained only about 0.4L of refrigerant, while it should have had (going by memory here) about 3L. That is to say, very significant refrigerant loss. Of course, huge improvement in AC function right after refill.
