AC insanity!! Help!!

@ROFF - So how'd this situation turn out?

I live a little ways up the road north of Dallas, and I am currently trying to get my a/c working on my '87 FJ60. I need to buy some replacement parts (esp condenser and drier), and I'd like to stick with R12 if I can. My rig sat without running for about 4 years. So if y'all suggest replacing any other parts straight away, please advise.

My main concern is if there are still any shops in the area that service R12. If there are, then I will confidently move forward toward purchasing the parts. If it's just too too scarce, then maybe I'll have to do the conversion.

Do y'all have any a/c shop references that will charge R12? Even better if they know FJ60s.

You won't find any shops with R12 sitting around....BUT it is still available (small cans) off of ebay and other private sellers. I'm sure I've got a couple of cans laying around my shop. R12 will definitely cool better than R134a (unless you upgrade certain parts).

Converting to R134a however would make servicing so much easier.

Ok. Got to the airport parking lot last night, poped the hood and did a thorough verification that all AC components were correct. (I spent my time on the road studying and obsessing on this)

Next step?

Suggestions?

Different mechanic?

This is the area I should probably stay away from. Dealing with somewhat hazardous chemicals and high pressures.

I'm fortunate to have some great LC specialists relatively close so may have to bite the bullet and turn it over.

Bumping this old thread because I'm running to similar issue after replacing all the same parts as you. Had shop vacuum and charge for me but not cooling and they are saying expansion valve. I just replaced with Denso but they said depending how long it sat on a shelf they go bad sometimes. Did you ever figure out what your issue was?

I ended up replacing all the major AC components and converted to R134a. The AC cools the vehicle more than adequately - and I live in Texas where it's triple digits.
