I'm in the process of doing the drivers side CV boot replacement. The ABS Sensor is stuck in the steering arm. Am I able to twist and pull that thing out without damaging anything other then the sensor itself? Any tips on? Thanks, John

I'll assume the obvious: You have removed the small bolt holding the sensor to the steering knuckle. My rig came from the northeast and I couldn't...for the life of me...get the ABS sensors on the steering knuckles removed due to the corrosion issue. So I had to disconnect the ABS sensor wire within the engine bay...unbolt all the little holders along the path and then just keep the sensor and wire tied to the steering knuckle.

You definitely DO NOT want to damage the sensor and/or wire: You have to buy the entire assembly from Toyota if you damage just the wire or the sensor.

Spressomon, Thanks for the response. My cruiser is from the NE also. I considered doing what you suggested but I couldn't get past that with my luck as soon as I finished the cv boot replacement, The sensor would probably fail.

I ordered the sensor from Toyota came to $160.00 for those that are wondering. I finally went with a drill bit and drilled the sensor out. Good as new.

All told so far with the sensor replacement I have $350 in the repair. $200 in parts and $150 in tools(torque, puller and misc). Anytime I can replace labor charge for tools I'm a happy man.

Waking up an old thread...
Norway is definitely in the north east!
Having the same problem getting the sensor out.
Can anybody say anything about how much this sensor can take? Where can I apply force?
Either twist and pull from the inside, feels very weak and rubbery; or push or hammer from the outside, on the square head or on the edge?
Is there any metal anywhere in the sensor, or just plastic and rubber?

I had the same problem and I don't think you'll be able to apply much force without damaging it. Disconnecting the wire in the engine bay and undoing the clamps like spressomon said is your easiest option. When I eventually changed mine (due to malfunction) it took a lot of force to drive them out from the outside with the hub removed.

Let me start by saying that I am a proponent of adding on to good threads rather than starting new ones.

So, I'm three hours into replacing my PS CV boots and all but 30 minutes of that is trying to remove the ABS sensor, otherwise known as step 2. The facts: the sensor is ruined. The wire finally separated from the sensor and the plug is still in the hub. Questions:

1. How do I remove the plug from the backside? I don't want to disassemble the hub to get at it from the front. Can I just take a pair of pliers to it?
2. If I decide to cut my losses and drive to a shop, can the truck even be driven with one ABS sensor not connected?

I'm going to order a new sensor/harness from American Toyota regardless, but I could really use some help. Thanks.

AFAIK you'll just be without ABS. I suspect the sensor is corroded enough to not allow you to pull it out with needle nose pliers...but give it a try as you've got nothing to loose. If in doubt just pull the ABS fuse for your errands.

I had to take a die grinder/Dremmel to mine and then took a 12ga brass bore brush to clean it out...and a light coat of that uber sticky lube designed for urethane bushings on both mating surfaces and its been fine since.

After trying all the tricks, the end game for me was a dremel. There's not much room to get a straight shot at the hole with a dremel, but if you happen to have a flex drive for your dremel it makes everything easy. I'd had the flex on the shelf for years [came in a kit] and never needed it before. The ABS sensor job was what it was made for :-)

You're fine to run without it, just disables abs and activates the ABS light. Could vary if you have VSC/ATRAC.
After getting a code I glanced at mine and then ordered a replacement as it 'looked' like a 5 minute deal... Subsequently destroyed the old one from the back side and later removed the hub for other service and it was much easier to get the rest out.

I would only expect a chance at removal without destruction if you are accessing it from both sides.

If its sufficiently stuck that it resists then the plastic case will break up when any kind of force is applied. There was simply no way to save mine, and others have described the same situation. It may be possible to gently drive the sensor out of the knuckle from outside, but it takes very little force to break the plastic. There was no way mine was coming out in one piece.

I pulled mine a while back trying to diagnose a pulsation, and the front two wheel sensors had what appeared to be anti-seize on them. The two rears were a bear, but the fronts pulled out fine.

I put a light coat of anti-seize on all four, hoping to not have the same problem next time.

Also, I happen to have a front RH wheel sensor for sale in the 'for sale' section! I'll send you a PM...

Thanks for all the advice. I think we need to edit a few of the CV boot threads to go into more detail about the potential problems/pitfalls of removing the ABS sensor. Disconnecting the sensor from under the hood and feeding slack towards the hub seems to be the cheaper and less time consuming solution (says Brian as he waits 2-3 days for a new sensor and harness from American Toyota).

Scott, totally appreciate it but I ordered a sensor an hour ago. Thanks though!

My ABS light has been on for a few months now. The computer threw the codes C0200 RW Sensor Fault AND C1249 Master Cylinder Pressure Sensor Fault. Do you think there's any hope of just cleaning the sensor? Sounds like as soon as I try to pull this thing it's all down hill. If I need to replace, are there any options other than the dealership parts dept for this? Forgive me but I just caught this post and haven't done my homework searching other threads yet.

If there are no driveability issues, I would clear the codes and see if they come back before going too far.

I pulled a few ATRAC codes that haven't come back since clearing them....and a new non-returnable speed sensor I ordered in response to the codes I pulled...:bang:

ABS sensor/harness is en route from American Toyota. I'm going to leave the old harness in place along its path to the ECU until the new part arrives so that I can easily replace it without trying to remember/guess where it's supposed to go.

As far as the sensor plug, all that remains is a metal piece now flush with the hub, i.e. nothing to grab onto. It appears to be magnetic.

1. Is it safe to drill the metal plug out from the inside?
2. What's on the other side, i.e. can you drill too far?
3. When installing the new sensor plug, is anti-sieze really safe to apply?
4. Anything else I should know? I can't afford to break anything else!

Just ran into the same issue.. sensor was melted/corroded, and won't come out in one piece. Going at it with the dremel in the morning. Bummer, this should have been a 5 minute job to replace.. turning into a nightmare. I'm trying to avoid having to pull the hub out, don't want to mess with all that comes with that at the moment.

Hi guys, destroyed my crusty abs sensor trying to remove it. Does anyone know if I can pull the ABS fuse and safely drive the truck? I assume I can drive without the sensor, but will get a lot of codes etc...I have a new sensor coming but would like to drive the truck.
