Looking for best way to approach/troubleshoot where the issue is..right front or right rear sensor showing open. Not sure if it's the sensor, connections, wiring harness to sensor. First step thought to get ohm meter, put to sensor to see if/where there is drop in power. was careful with sensors when doing brakes-front axle knuckle rebuild just done-treated those suckers like they were eggs. new calipers/rotors/pads/fluid on all 4. Roadtest didn't identify any lurch or resistance with pedal when braking to indicate abs fail.
Scan was not done with Toyota scan tool-so they had to id by doing the pin check counting flashes. Not sure if it's a sensor issue or not-don't want to just run to part replacement just yet.

FSM (RM451U) ABS diagnostics start on page DI-188. Code 36 starts on page DI-210 and runs to DI-213.

These pages detail the recommended procedure for the 1996 FZJ80.

Both code retrieval methods you described are viable.
